Exploring Life & Business with Denise McElhaney of Denise’s Happy Hounds, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise McElhaney.

Hi Denise, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always had a deep love for animals, especially dogs. From a young age, I found myself drawn to their personalities, loyalty, and the joy they bring. I started grooming because I wanted to combine that love with something creative and hands-on. After working in the grooming industry for several years, I realized I wanted to create a place where dogs were treated with genuine care and patience — not rushed through like a number on a list. That dream became Denise’s Happy Hounds.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh, there were plenty! (laughs) The early days were filled with long hours — sometimes twelve-hour days just trying to keep up. Grooms took longer than normal because I wanted everything to be perfect, and I was still finding my rhythm. I had to learn about correct pricing, budgeting, accounting — all the behind-the-scenes parts no one warns you about.

Managing employees was another big learning curve. Schedules fill up fast, and when someone calls in sick or decides the job isn’t for them, it can be tough. Grooming isn’t easy work — it’s physically demanding, emotionally draining at times, and takes real dedication. But even on the hardest days, it’s worth it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Denise’s Happy Hounds, LLC?
We offer full-service grooming, haircuts, creative hairstyles, baths, nail trims, de-shedding treatments, and even wag swag like bows and bandanas. We offer color for a splash of uniqueness for your pup. We are the home of “The Doodle Lady” We also carry high-quality pet care products and focus on creating a calm, clean, and loving environment for every visit. We offer daycare, playtime, and a toy box with toys for all sizes.

Seeing the happiness on a dog’s face after a groom and hearing owners say, “They’ve never looked this good before!” — that never gets old. I’m also proud of the team we’ve built; everyone here shares the same love and respect for animals. Watching the business grow from a small dream into a trusted name in the community has been incredibly rewarding.

We’re always looking for ways to grow and give back — whether it’s community events, helping local rescues, or expanding our services. My goal is to keep improving, keep learning, and keep making dogs — and their owners — happy for years to come.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Going fishing with my Dad and Papa. My Dad was so good at fishing, and we still used bamboo poles back then. My Papa could navigate the Mississippi river better than any I’ve ever known. We always had a good ole fish fry when we were done.
