Today we’d like to introduce you to AUSTIN MILAM.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story started at the University of Memphis while working towards my degree in Exercise Science. My health and fitness had become the top priority of my life. While on the U of M cheer team, I dealt with a series of minor injuries that could be overcame with proper training and recovering. I knew then how excited I was to used what we were currently learning to help other people.
In 2020, during the COVID shutdown, I was approached to take ownership of the business I was currently working in, P.T. Squared. Although the future was uncertain and businesses around us were shutting down for good, I knew in my heart this was where God was leading me. I had a good amount of experience with Personal Training and Group Training, and I sought out business education online and in books, but no clue how to run actually run a business. Krista, the previous owner, gave me a piece of advice that would give me a lot of confidence in my uncertainty. “Do right by people and your business will succeed. You will learn the technical stuff along the way.”
With that advice, my wife Olyvia and I have recently celebrated 5 years of ownership of P.T. Squared Fitness and Wellness. We spend our days taking care of the health of some amazing people, with the help of five other coaches. We have helped people overcome a variety of joint pains, decrease symptoms of some diseases like Parkinson’s, ALS, or POTS. We’ve helped people increase bone density and fight osteoporosis, get back to regular life after surgery, and fight the effects of aging.
If done right, exercise and food can be the best medicine you would ever give your body. What a blessing it is to own a business to help deliver this form of healing.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are always obstacles along a path to success, whatever your version of success looks like. Obstacles create learning and growth opportunities that prepare us for the next big level.
Learning how to not only do the job, but how to structure what you do into a model that other people can follow is where challenges began. One of my biggest and longest struggle was finding staff to meet the needs of customers who are already ready to go. Then, after I am able to hire someone, a lot of time is needed to train them in order for them to be up to standard. Half of the time they don’t stay or are not ever meet the standard, and the other half has to be paid twice a month every month. Which brings up the next big challenge, making enough money. Paying a larger staff plus rent, softwares, equipment, taxes and more, means we need more marketing and leads coming in consistantly.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about P.T. Squared Fitness and Wellness?
P.T. Squared offers Personal Training and Group Training. We focus on functional fitness, overall health, and longevity. We work a lot with women 50+ and special populations, such as Active Agers, people with arthritis, joint pain, Parkinson’s, Dementia, or Alzheimer’s. We are very involved in our local community and raise money each year for a P.T. Squared Scholarship. Overall, we are another mom and pop shop on Main Street, working hard to take care of others. My wife and I thank God for the opportunity to do what we love, with who we love, for a living!
What are your plans for the future?
We want to bring functional fitness into youth sports! Our average clientele is around 65 years old. However, the functional movement patterns are not too far off from what athletes need, just at another level.
We have had a couple of teams bring us to their facility for team training. Future plans involve more focus on teaching athletes what I wasn’t taught, that could have kept me injury free.
