Conversations with Nykeith McNeal

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nykeith McNeal.

Hi Nykeith, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
How did I start, and where am I today?

My journey began in the world of music videos. From 2010 to 2015, I was fully immersed in directing and producing music videos for artists across my city. It was an exciting time creatively, but around 2015 I stepped away from the camera to regroup and refocus.

Everything changed in 2019. A close friend of mine, the late Dellguan Coleman, created three short films that reignited something in me. His passion and creativity inspired me to pick the camera back up, and that same year I returned to filmmaking with a short film of my own. I haven’t stopped since.

Today, I’ve grown from those early steps into a full-fledged filmmaker with multiple movies streaming and over twenty short films completed. I’m proud to be recognized as an award-winning filmmaker, and I’m continuing to elevate my work with a brand-new series on the way. What started as a rediscovered passion has turned into a thriving career, and I’m just getting started.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
For the most part, the creative side of my journey—writing, directing, and bringing stories to life—has been a smooth and natural process. That part has always come easy to me. But as every indie filmmaker knows, the real challenges often come from scheduling and budgeting.

Working with limited resources while trying to execute big ideas is never simple. Coordinating cast and crew, finding locations, and stretching every dollar can be stressful, especially when your vision is larger than your budget. Still, that’s the beauty of independent filmmaking. You learn to be resourceful, to solve problems on the fly, and to figure out how to make something powerful out of what you have. Those challenges shape you, and they make the victories even more meaningful.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a filmmaker who specializes in writing, directing, and producing emotionally driven stories across genres—family, faith-based, drama, horror, and suspense. My work spans short films, feature-length projects, and now an upcoming original series. I’m known for creating impactful narratives on an indie scale, taking limited resources and turning them into cinematic, character-focused stories that resonate with audiences.

One of the things I’m most proud of is the consistency of my work. I’ve completed over twenty short films, multiple feature projects, and built a catalog of movies that are now streaming. Each project represents growth, dedication, and a deep belief in storytelling—even when the odds are stacked against me. I’m also proud of the recognition I’ve received along the way, including becoming an award-winning filmmaker and continuing to develop larger projects each year.

What sets me apart is my ability to create big-feeling films with small budgets. I approach every project with the mindset of problem-solving rather than limitation. My background in both music videos and film allows me to blend visual style with strong storytelling, and my drive to keep improving—project after project—has helped me build momentum in a very competitive industry. I honor the craft, I honor the story, and I bring a

What makes you happy?
What truly makes me happy is creating—taking an idea that starts in my mind and bringing it to life on screen. There’s something fulfilling about the entire journey: the brainstorming, the planning, the long hours, and even the challenges that test you along the way. All of that hard work builds toward a moment when you sit back, watch the final product, and see how people respond to it. Knowing that something you created can move someone, entertain them, or make them feel something real—that’s the kind of happiness that keeps me doing what I do.
