Rising Stars: Meet Jay Woods of Memphis TN (Mobile DJ)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Woods.

Jay, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It actually started by accident back in college. My roommate, Jean, had some DJ software on his computer. He showed it to me one night before heading to bed, and I was immediately hooked. When he woke up the next morning, I was still there—I had stayed up all night teaching myself the ins and outs of the program.
That one sleepless night sparked a career. Today, I’m the owner of Signature Sound Enterprise. I’ve moved from that college dorm to a professional level, with 90% of my bookings now coming from corporate clients, schools, and major organizations.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest struggle wasn’t necessarily the technical side, but learning to be true to myself as a performer. When I first started, I thought being a ‘good DJ’ meant keeping my head down, focusing strictly on the mix, and staying behind the booth.
Over time, I learned that my true value comes from connection. Now, I’m not afraid to be myself—I’ll grab the mic, walk into the crowd, and even dance with my clients. Breaking out of that box and embracing my own interactive style was a huge turning point for me.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What do you do, what do you specialize in, and what are you known for?
“I am the owner and lead entertainer at Signature Sound Enterprise. While I’m a DJ at heart, my business specializes in high-end entertainment for corporate clients, organizations, and schools—which currently make up about 90% of my bookings. I’m known for being more than just the guy playing music in the corner; I’m a content creator and a producer (with tracks like ‘RIOT’ and ‘Christmas Twerk Song’), but primarily, I am known as a high-energy event host who ensures the atmosphere is professional yet unforgettable.”
What are you most proud of?
“I am most proud of my evolution as a businessman and a brand. Transitioning from a hobbyist to rebranding as Signature Sound Enterprise was a major step. That growth was validated recently when I was nominated for ‘DJ of the Year’ at the 2025 Memphis Hip Hop Awards. Seeing my work recognized by the city and my peers—especially after putting so much energy into rebranding and refining my corporate service—is my proudest achievement to date.”
What sets you apart from others?
“Authentic interaction. A lot of DJs measure a good night by how smooth their transitions are while keeping their heads down. I measure a good night by the connection I make with the crowd. I distinguish myself by stepping out from behind the booth—I’m on the microphone, I’m walking the room, and I’m often on the dance floor dancing right alongside my clients. I don’t just provide a soundtrack; I provide an interactive experience.”

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is simple: Don’t worry about anything, but pray about everything. That mindset has been my foundation. In an industry that can be unpredictable, replacing worry with faith has kept me grounded and focused on what really matters.
