Today we’d like to introduce you to Deonta Hampton.
Hi Deonta, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
PowerforYouth901 was born out of my journey as a radio personality at a local radio station, where many youth approached me with questions about my experience and how they could pursue a career in radio. These conversations revealed a strong need for mentorship and exposure to the media and entertainment industry.
After discussing this need with my business partner, Cameron Williams, also known as DJ Smooth, we made the decision to mentor youth and provide hands-on education in radio and the entertainment business. Although the program was delayed due to the tragic passing of my friend, brother, and business partner DJ Smooth from a heart attack in 2019, the vision we shared remained alive. His legacy continues to inspire the mission of PowerforYouth901, and I remain committed to carrying forward the work we began empowering youth through mentorship, education, and opportunity.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey has not been a smooth one. One of the greatest challenges was the passing of my brother and business partner, DJ Smooth, which deeply impacted both the vision and momentum of the organization. In addition, securing financial stability, consistent community support, and volunteers has been an ongoing struggle. Building awareness, establishing credibility, and gaining broad community buy-in for the mission and cause have required persistence and continued effort.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
