Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Holmes.
Hi Jasmine, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’d say about 2016 is the first year I decided to pick up a makeup brush to practice on someone other than myself. I was working front counter at the Sheraton Downtown Memphis & it was mandatory we looked presentable. I had a “work mom” that constantly pushed me that I should do makeup! Shortly after I started with the cheapest kit. I would take my little cheap kit to work & do makeup on other women & looking back I’m glad they trusted me because I had absolutely no skills lol! My boyfriend at the time which is now my husband, would have a camera & I had this one bedroom apartment where we’d set up a background & he would take pics of the makeup I did on myself. Those pics were my favorite close ups of myself for a while! Around 2017 is when I got interested in lash extensions & well it was mandatory for us to be licensed to do so. Fast forward to 2018 I enrolled into Gould’s Academy where I completed my hours in learning Esthetics. I’m very grateful I was able to go full time for those 6 months & focus solely on school. I was able to build up a steady clientele & I got my first private suite! Boy I’ve met some amazing people doing what I love. Over the years I’ve worked various creative shoots. I’ve also been able to have my work in a number of fashion shows. It took some networking and getting myself out there. I’m not afraid to introduce myself. I’ve also had my work featured in music videos & most recently I’ve taken my talents to New York to do makeup for Ms. Elise Neal on The Tamron Hall Show!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it certainly has not been smooth. I’ve had many bumps along the way. I’ve been taken advantage of, I’ve lowballed myself when it came to knowing my worth, I’ve felt discouraged some days. What I love about myself is that I’m not afraid to slow down. Take some time to myself & come back to it. I’m not afraid to go at my own pace. It’s easy to feel burnt out in this industry. In the end, this is MY business. I’m allowed to control my story right??
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
These days, I specialize in soft glam in studio & bridal makeup on site & bridal parties which is my favorite!! I even did my own wedding makeup lol. I have clients that love my soft glam & I’m most proud of the returning clientele especially ones I’ve met from a bridal party! I think I stand out through professionalism & reliability. I’m sanitary as well. I don’t play that lol. I give my girls what they want & I have the ability to make them feel comfortable AND confident leaving my chair! I’ve mastered all skin tones, textures & ages.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the vibes! I love how slow it is sometimes. Especially compared to other cities. No one loves traffic! lol. I LOVE the food as well! This city has the best food. I dislike the crime. Crime is everywhere, but when it’s your hometown it just hits different.
