Today we’d like to introduce you to Marlinda Shorter.
Hi Marlinda, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Marlinda Shorter is a Memphis-based professional photographer, entrepreneur, and the founder of Unspeakable Joy Photography. With over two decades of experience in the photo industry—ranging from the analog chemistry of Kodak wet labs to modern digital portraiture—Marlinda has dedicated her career to preserving the “unspeakable” essence of the human spirit. A graduate of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and a proud product of Memphis City Schools, she blends her background in retail leadership and community service to mentor aspiring creatives. When she isn’t behind the lens at her studio in the historic Hickory Ridge Mall, she is a devoted mother and a passionate advocate for the arts and youth development in her hometown.
From Chrysalis to Canvas: The Unspeakable Joy of Marlinda Shorter
In the heart of Memphis, there is a story being told—not just through words, but through the click of a shutter and the preservation of a legacy. My name is Marlinda Shorter, and my life’s work, Unspeakable Joy Photography, is more than a business; it is the wings I have grown through seasons of deep change. I have often viewed my journey through the stages of a butterfly: a slow, intentional transition from a tiny seed of potential into a life of flight.
Stage One: The Egg – A Legacy Planted
My love for photography was a gift passed down from my parents, wedded in 1977. Long before I held a professional camera, I held their legacy. At sixteen, I began working in the photo department at a local Walgreens. There, I watched life unfold in 35mm rolls and 110 film. I wasn’t just a cashier; I was a “Specialist of the Kodak Wet Labs,” a guardian of memories. Whether it was the miracle of a birth or the solemnity of a final farewell, I felt the weight of my role. Even then, I knew that helping a stranger cherish their history was one of the coolest callings I could ever have.
Stage Two: The Caterpillar – Growth and Grit
By 2004, my world was expanding. I was helping open a new store from the ground up while preparing for the birth of my son, Kylon. As the industry shifted from film to Fuji digital machines, I shifted too. Kylon became my muse and my motivation; I made him the “poster child” of our online products, teaching anyone who would listen how to save their precious moments in the new digital age. During those years, I balanced the roles of daughter, sister, and mother, taking photos at kitchen tables and in backyards, not yet fully realizing the worth of the gift I was cultivating. I was growing, eating up every bit of knowledge, and waiting for my moment to change.
Stage Three: The Chrysalis – The Strength Within the Shadow
They say weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. My night began on December 23, 2013, when my mother, Gwendolyn Gilbert Shorter, was called home. She lived with a “million-dollar smile” and a courage that refused to let illness define her. Watching how legendary Memphis photographer Tyrone Easley captured her spirit taught me that a photograph can freeze time and defy grief.
Pain is inevitable, but our reaction to it is a choice. In the quiet of my own chrysalis, I began to transform. I bought my first Canon Rebel SL1. I studied manual settings at the Cossitt Library under the guidance of Ariel Cobbert. I practiced in the pews of my church and the wings of the Hattiloo Theatre. I was no longer just “getting paid”—I was crafting an identity. I was breaking out of the shell, ready to see the world in full color.
Navigating the Wind: Lessons from the Journey
As I moved into this new season of flight, I quickly realized that being a visionary requires more than just a sharp eye behind the lens; it requires the stamina to lead. I faced the modern challenges of entrepreneurship head-on—the pressure to be constantly “present” on social media and the difficult task of defining my specific niche. I had to learn that my worth isn’t measured by an algorithm, but by the authentic connections I make with the people in front of my camera.
Perhaps the most vital lesson I’ve gathered is that no butterfly flies alone. I have learned the profound importance of building a team to elevate the client experience. Whether it’s a second shutter capturing a candid angle, a creative eye helping to style a studio set, or a supportive presence representing Unspeakable Joy at community vendor fairs, my team is the wind beneath my wings.
Stage Four: The Flight – Unspeakable Joy
The final push into the light came with the blessing of my father, Yakini Kantigi. Known as the “Wood Doctor,” he was my loudest cheerleader, a man of genuine kindness who believed I could have whatever I desired. When he was called home in December 2024, I felt my wings finally dry. The moisture of grief turned into the strength for flight.
I decided to plant my studio, Unspeakable Joy Photography, in the heart of my community at the historical Hickory Ridge Mall. This location is symbolic; like me, the mall endured the wreckage of a 2008 storm, yet it still stands as a beacon of hope for visionaries.
Today, my mission is simple: to help you feel seen, confident, and preserved. We aren’t just taking pictures; we are strengthening relationships and celebrating culture through visual storytelling. Out of the pain, I have found a joy that is truly unspeakable. As I soar into this next chapter, I invite my Memphis community to join me. Let us value our essence. Let us honor our legacy. Let us “Joy” more and more.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
