Hidden Gems: Meet Monika Hicks of Hicks Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monika Hicks.

Hi Monika , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My interest in the field of mental health began early in my childhood. When I was in elementary school, my late uncle was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Watching him navigate the world in a way that felt so different from everyone else in our family sparked a deep curiosity in me. I didn’t fully understand it at the time, but that experience became my first real introduction to mental illness—and it stayed with me.
As I grew older and began thinking about career paths, I initially envisioned myself as an attorney. I loved engaging in thoughtful debates and advocating for ideas. However, once I realized that pursuing law would require an intense focus on history, I felt a disconnect and knew it wasn’t the right fit for me.
That realization led me back to what had always intrigued me most, people and the human mind. I decided to pursue my undergraduate degree in psychology with the intention of becoming a counselor. After graduating, I began exploring graduate programs in counseling, but I found that many were narrowly focused on specific tracks such as marriage and family therapy or substance abuse. While those areas are important, I wanted a path that offered more flexibility and breadth.
A pivotal moment came when a mentor encouraged me to explore the field Social Work. They explained that independently licensed social workers can qualify for many of the same roles as psychologists and licensed professional counselors. That insight shifted everything for me. I went on to pursue my Master of Social Work and committed myself fully to the journey of becoming independently licensed.
Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work across a wide range of settings as a mental health clinician serving youth, young adults, families, individuals navigating addiction, and even within medical social work. Each experience deepened my understanding and reinforced my passion for this field. Today, I practice in a private setting, where I continue to support clients in meaningful ways.
While I always knew I wanted to be a therapist, I never initially envisioned myself as a mental health practice owner. That shift came at a pivotal moment in my life when I felt a strong, spiritual push to step out of my comfort zone. Despite having a stable and well-paying leadership position, I felt called to something greater. What began as discomfort became clarity, and ultimately, obedience. Taking the leap into full-time entrepreneurship was not easy, but it was necessary for my growth and purpose.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For the most part, my journey has been a smooth one. I’ve always been a goal-oriented individual; someone who not only sets clear intentions, but also creates a strategic plan to bring those goals to life. That mindset has been a guiding force throughout both my personal and professional journey.
I’ve also always had a natural curiosity and a desire to learn, grow, and share my perspective with others. That passion has helped me stay grounded and focused, even in seasons of uncertainty.
I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have a strong support system. People who have consistently rooted for me and believed in me, even during moments when self-doubt tried to make its way in. That encouragement has made a meaningful difference in my ability to keep moving forward.
If I had to identify the most challenging part of my journey, it would be the decision to step away from the security of a full-time position to pursue entrepreneurship. That transition required a deeper level of faith and trust than I had ever exercised before. It wasn’t just a professional shift—it was a personal and spiritual one as well.
However, what I’ve gained on the other side has far outweighed the anxiety I felt in making that leap. The growth, the freedom, and the alignment with my purpose have all been incredibly rewarding, reaffirming that the risk was not only necessary, but worth it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Hicks Consulting ?
At Hicks Consulting, we specialize in supporting high-aching women—particularly midlife professionals—who are navigating the pressure of “doing it all” while quietly feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or stretched too thin. Our work focuses on helping women strengthen boundaries, communicate their needs with confidence, and create a more balanced, sustainable life without guilt.
We are especially known for working with women who appear high-functioning on the outside but internally struggle with anxiety, emotional burnout, and difficulty prioritizing themselves. Our approach is practical, compassionate, and insight-driven—we don’t just explore emotions, we help clients build real-life tools they can apply immediately in their relationships, careers, and daily routines.
What sets Hicks Consulting apart is our ability to blend clinical expertise with real-world relatability. We understand the nuanced experiences of professional women who are balancing careers, relationships, and personal expectations. Therapy here feels less like “fixing something broken” and more like gaining clarity, confidence, and control over your life.
In addition to individual therapy services, Hicks Consulting also partners with corporate organizations, churches, and community groups to provide engaging mental health workshops for both men and women. These workshops are designed to educate, reduce stigma, and offer practical strategies around stress management, emotional wellness, communication, and boundary-setting—meeting people where they are in environments they already trust.
Brand-wise, we are most proud of creating a space where ambitious women feel seen without judgment. Our messaging and services are intentionally designed to normalize conversations around boundaries, self-worth, and emotional wellness—especially for women who are used to being the strong one for everyone else.
We want readers to know that our services go beyond traditional talk therapy. Whether through individual sessions, workshops, or future offerings, our goal is to equip people with the confidence and skills to advocate for themselves, show up authentically, and live a life that feels as good as it looks.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t view my life or business through the lens of luck. I believe my journey is a reflection of God’s goodness and intentional design. Long before I stepped into this early realm, I know my path was already established with purpose.
What some may call “good luck” or “bad luck,” I see as divine timing and alignment. Both my challenges and my successes have played a role in shaping how I show up as a therapist, a business owner, and a person. My steps are ordered, and every opportunity, lesson, and breakthrough has come at the time it was meant to.
That perspective keeps me grounded. It allows me to move with faith, remain resilient during difficult seasons, and trust that what is for me will not miss me. My business is not built on chance—it’s built on purpose, obedience, and trust in God’s timing.
