Today we’d like to introduce you to Linda Sutphin.
Hi Linda, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Mutt Strut 5k began as idea in 2016 when one our dogs named Artie was being adopted. I had been wanting to start a 5k and Artie’s adoptive mom is a runner. We began tossing around ideas, settled a date and began planning. We had our 1st 5k in Millington in June of that year. 3 years later we moved our race to Overton Park and changed to the 2nd Saturday in October. This year will be our 10th anniversary and our 3rd year allowing dogs to participate in the race. Our number of participants grows each year. We average 200 people and 50-75 dogs. All of our proceeds from the event go directly to Dogs 2nd Chance rescue to support the care of the rescued dogs. No dog is turned away due to breed or health issues as long as there is space in a foster home.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Our first 3 years the race was in June which was always hot. Our race course did not provide any shade. During Covid we did a virtual race and the next year we changed our date to October and location to Overton Park. Sponsorships are always a struggle and lack of volunteers up to the event is sometimes an issue.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a retired electrician who puts all of her efforts into Dogs 2nd Chance rescue. This will be the 19th year Dogs 2nd Chance has been saving stray abandoned and abused dogs and puppies.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
We have learned that there is cruelty in this world but given the chance most people will rise to the occasion. We have also learned that runners and walkers are great supporters.
