Today we’d like to introduce you to Bart Caldwell.
Hi Bart, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started Caldwell Painting in 2012 with my father, Billy. We both saw too many companies treating painting like just another commodity, something to be rushed through with minimal care. We wanted to build something different. We wanted to build a company that puts true craftsmanship and attention to detail at the center of every job.
From the beginning, our focus has always been on doing the work the right way. That means taking the time to properly prepare surfaces, using high-quality materials (we’re big believers in Benjamin Moore paints), and paying close attention to the details.
Over the years we’ve become known for doing large custom homes and specialty work like Venetian plaster and cabinet painting, two areas where precision and technique really make a difference in the final result. However we enjoy doing smaller projects as well.
Today, My wife and I (Fallon) work together. She is amazing at keeping all of us together and amazing at color design. Because of her Caldwell Painting has grown into a trusted name in both interior and exterior painting for residential and light commercial projects. We recently expanded with a second location in Nashville, allowing us to serve more clients across Tennessee while maintaining the same standards we started with.
For us, painting has never been about just changing a color. It’s about transforming spaces and creating lasting beauty that homeowners can enjoy for years to come. That commitment to craftsmanship is what continues to drive us every day.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all! The first few years were really tough, and I know that’s true for most small businesses. When we started we had the skills and the work ethic, but we quickly learned that running a business is a completely different challenge.
Cash flow was probably the biggest struggle early on. Jobs would come in, but waiting days for payment while still having to pay our painters and buy materials every week was stressful. We also had a hard time finding reliable, quality painters who shared our obsession with doing the job right. A lot of people want to cut corners on prep work or rush through the details, and we refused to do that.
There were definitely moments when we questioned whether we had made the right decision. But we stayed committed to our core belief that painting is a craft and we knew that there were people out there that wanted work done right. We focused on doing every job with real attention to detail, whether it was a interior repaint or more specialized work. Slowly, that reputation started to spread through word of mouth, and the business began to stabilize.
Looking back, those early struggles taught us a lot about running a company the right way. They made us stronger and more intentional about the kind of team we build and the level of work we deliver. Today, with our expansion into Nashville, I’m grateful we pushed through those hard years. It’s made us appreciate every client and every well-done project even more.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I love decorative finishes! I really enjoy Venetian plaster and even get into some custom bespoke finishes as well.
