My entrepreneurial journey began in 2017 after a significant career shift. Following a layoff from a lucrative position, I took a job that offered stability but didn’t meet my financial needs. The turning point came during a routine grocery trip, where I had to abandon my cart due to financial constraints—a moment I call my “Broken Moment.” This experience ignited a profound change in my perspective and motivated me to reassess my career goals.
From that day forward, I approached my work with renewed determination. Despite being told I needed to wait 18 months for a promotion, I committed myself wholeheartedly. At the 18-month mark, I earned my first promotion, doubling my salary. Within nine months, I re-entered the six-figure industry, tripling my income within three years.
During 2018-2021, I revolutionized my networking approach and interview preparation. My presence in meetings and interviews became known for its impact, reflecting my strong work ethic and commitment to excellence.
Recognizing a demand for my expertise, I founded The Focus Group By Felecia—a professional development firm specializing in coaching individuals on interview skills, workplace etiquette, and personal growth. This venture has allowed me to empower countless students and professionals to excel in their careers and personal lives.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting and growing my business has been a journey marked by challenges, yet every obstacle has been profoundly rewarding. One of the greatest struggles has been convincing individuals, schools, and organizations of the inherent value in my teachings. I’ve endeavored to illustrate how my professional development, interview coaching, and networking skills can not only enhance an individual’s life but also catalyze significant career advancements.
Despite encountering fewer paid coaching opportunities initially than anticipated, I dedicated myself wholeheartedly to those organizations that recognized the potential impact. For each client, whether student or employee, I committed to delivering 150% effort, ensuring transformative outcomes.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
After three years, I’ve returned to my roots in the Mental Health industry as Deputy Administrator for the Shelby County Government Mental Health Court—a true full-circle moment for me. My journey into this role has been enriched by my recent entrepreneurial endeavors, which have uniquely prepared me for the challenges ahead.
In my current position, my primary responsibility is to assemble the most effective Mental Health Advocacy team for Shelby County’s Court System. Being part of such a transformative program that offers citizens a second chance at life is incredibly fulfilling and humbling.
I take immense pride in embodying a genuine commitment to helping others, fostered through both personal growth and professional development. This journey has instilled in me a resilient attitude that I hope inspires others to overcome obstacles.
What sets me apart is my unwavering belief in the “I can do anything” mindset. Amid challenges, I remain steadfastly focused on achieving my objectives. My grounding comes from a deep sense of faith, which fuels my dedication to serving others, even in times of personal adversity.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I believe in acknowledging those who have been instrumental in my journey. Firstly, I am deeply grateful to God for blessing me with a positive mindset, the courage to step out in faith, and the determination to bring my ideas to fruition.
I owe a special debt of gratitude to my children, Dante, Zyon, and Auston Walker. Their unwavering support and inspiration have been the driving force behind my decision to pursue a path less traveled. Throughout the highs and lows of entrepreneurship and personal challenges, they have shown remarkable patience and unwavering encouragement. Their love and mama hugs have kept me grounded and focused on my goals.
I also extend heartfelt thanks to my mother, Beverly Gilmore, and my uncle, Jeffrey Higgs. Their unwavering support has been the wind beneath my wings, reinforcing my belief in myself and providing crucial support in overcoming obstacles.
My extended family and friends have been my rock throughout this journey. Their genuine belief in me and my mission, coupled with their honesty and willingness to listen, brainstorm, and offer comfort during tough times, have been invaluable.
