Today we’d like to introduce you to Jean Andrus.
Hi Jean, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My husband and I moved downtown in 2009. After being retired a few years we wanted to do something to contribute to the South Main neighborhood. We both love books. We celebrated 12years in October.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh no! We selected the site for our store because it was at the southern end of the Trolley line. 6 months after opening the trolleys were stopped 6yrs. During that time the Central Station Apts were closed and a fence was put around the building
(making the area look derelict). 2 years later the fence left and the street was closed for demo of the train station and remodeling in to a Hotel. The hotel opened, hurrah, and the Trolleys came back, yea! 4 months later, low and behold we had a pandemic. We survived. We love meeting people from all over the world and talking about Memphis and books.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a new and used bookstore. We also carried a variety of unique gift items focused on local artists.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Have a business plan. Try not to borrow money. Be Patient.
Always be open the hours posted, You only have one opportunity to make a first impression
