Today we’d like to introduce you to Katina Johnson.
Hi Katina , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Well, I started my catering business back in 2016 in St. Louis, Mo. I was working a full time job and catering on the side until one day someone said maybe you should start a catering business. I thought about it and was like hmmmm that doesn’t sound bad. My background is casinos and hotels so I had plenty of experience in catering to larger crowds. I catered my first event and the rest was history.
My catering company is called Food For Thought Specialized Catering & Events. Food For Thought is a full serviced catering company that specializes in catering all types of events accommodating small and large occasions. We cater events such as birthday parties, weddings, corporate events, private dinners and more. We also offer specialty services to our customers so that they’ll stay connected, such as cooking classes, cooking demonstrations, meal prep services and event planning.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. The journey hasn’t been smooth, but it has been worth it. Over the past 10 years, I’ve faced challenges that tested me both personally and professionally. From inconsistent bookings in the early years, tight budgets, and learning how to properly price my worth, to managing staffing issues, client expectations, and the physical demands of the industry—there were moments I had to pivot, adapt, and push through.
I’ve also had to learn the business side the hard way: contracts, boundaries, time management, and saying no to opportunities that didn’t align with my growth. But every struggle came with a lesson that helped shape the company I run today.
Those challenges built resilience, discipline, and confidence. Ten years later, I’m proud to say I’m still standing, still growing, and still passionate about what I do.
As you know, we’re big fans of Food For Thought Specialized Catering & Events . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My business is a full-service catering company built on passion, consistency, and community. For the past 10 years, we’ve specialized in creating memorable food experiences for private events, corporate gatherings, weddings, and intimate celebrations. We’re known for bold flavors, beautifully presented dishes, and menus that feel both comforting and elevated.
What truly sets us apart is the intention behind everything we do. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all menus. Every event is curated with the client in mind, from customized menu planning to seamless execution. Our food tells a story, and that story is rooted in culture, creativity, and love.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the trust we’ve built. Being in business for a decade means we’ve grown with our clients—serving their milestones, celebrations, and special moments year after year. We’re also proud to be a Black-owned business that values excellence, professionalism, and representation in the culinary industry.
I want readers to know that when they book with us, they’re not just hiring a caterer—they’re investing in an experience. We bring passion to every plate, integrity to every contract, and pride to every event. Our goal is always the same: exceptional food, exceptional service, and unforgettable moments.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My biggest advice for anyone just starting out is to understand that passion alone isn’t enough—you have to learn the business just as much as you love the craft. I wish I had known earlier how important pricing, contracts, boundaries, and systems are. Don’t be afraid to charge what you’re worth, and don’t discount your value just to get booked. The right clients will respect your prices and your process.
Also, give yourself grace. You’re going to make mistakes, and that’s part of the journey. Every misstep teaches you something you’ll need later. Stay consistent, stay teachable, and don’t compare your chapter one to someone else’s chapter ten.
Build relationships, protect your brand, and don’t skip the foundational work—even when it feels slow. Success doesn’t happen overnight, but if you stay disciplined and intentional, it will come. Lastly, take care of yourself. Burnout is real in this industry, and learning when to rest is just as important as learning how to hustle.
If I had known all of that from the beginning, I would’ve moved with more confidence—but I’m grateful for the lessons because they shaped the business owner I am today.
