Today we’d like to introduce you to Marqueta Abraham DNP, APN, PMHNP-BC.
Hi Marqueta, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My Story – Dr. Marqueta Abraham, DNP, APRN, PMHNP-BC
I grew up in Whitehaven, a proud product of Westhaven Elementary, Lanier Jr. High School, and Fairley High School. From a young age, I dreamed of working in healthcare a dream shaped and supported by two of the most inspiring people in my life: my parents. My father, a proud Veteran who served post-Korean War, taught me the value of hard work and determination. My mother, a devoted educational assistant, inspired me through her compassion and lifelong dedication to helping others. Their love and guidance laid the foundation for everything I’ve achieved.
With their support, and spiritual mentorship from Pastor Bartholomew Orr, I pursued my dream relentlessly. Today, I am a doctoral-prepared psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner and the founder of CLR Mind Psychiatry, a practice rooted in community, compassion, and a deep desire to serve those often overlooked; especially Veterans and underserved populations.
My journey in healthcare has taken me through diverse fields such as critical care, cardiac step down, palliative care, and forensic nursing. These experiences deepened my understanding of both physical and mental wellness and sharpened my commitment to holistic care. My passion lies in mental health across the lifespan.
Education has been a vital part of my path. I hold two Bachelor of Science degrees in biology and exercise science from the University of Tennessee at Martin, a Master’s in Nursing and doctoral certificate in Advanced Practice Forensic Nursing from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, and a doctoral degree from Abilene Christian University. I also earned a post-graduate certificate as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner from Union University.
Throughout my career, I’ve been honored with several recognitions, including:
2018: Nominated as a Healthcare Hero by the Memphis Business Journal
2021: Recipient of the Inspire Award from the University of Tennessee at Martin
Featured in Contraceptive Technology Update to discuss STIs
Contributor to Shared Governance: A Practical Approach to Transforming Interprofessional Healthcare (Fourth Edition)
Published in the Journal of Black Nurses Association with my article “STI Education Among African American Women: An Educational Improvement Initiative”
I continue to share my expertise through speaking engagements with teenagers and churches across Memphis and surrounding areas helping break the stigma around mental health.
I am a proud member of the Tennessee Nurse Practitioner Association, Sigma Theta Tau, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., AANP, and a former Vice President of the AFGE Union-Memphis.
Serving others isn’t just my profession—it’s my life’s purpose. And I’m just getting started.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ll never forget a moment when a professor at one of the universities I attended looked me in the eye and said, “You will never become a doctor.” That comment hit hard. But instead of letting it stop me, I used it as fuel to push even harder. It became a motivator to prove to myself and others that I could achieve my dreams.
Becoming a business owner has been one of the biggest and boldest steps I’ve taken. When you start your own business, you’re betting on yourself. That’s not always easy, especially when you’re unsure where to begin. But that’s the thing, I learned that you don’t have to have all the answers. You just have to start.
I truly believe that God placed the right people in my life at the right times. That divine timing and support helped me navigate the unknowns and keep moving forward. Looking back, I’m grateful for every struggle and lesson because they’ve all contributed to my growth and the journey I’m on today.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

What truly sets me apart is the personalized approach to care. At CLR Mind Psychiatry, I recognize that no two individuals are the same and that mental health is deeply influenced by each person’s environment, history, and goals. I provide psychiatric evaluations, medication managements, consultations for companies, and follow-ups. I take the time to listen, understand, and design customized treatment plans that support healing and long-term growth.
I also pride myself on creating a safe, inclusive, and welcoming space for all. Mental health can be a deeply personal and vulnerable area, so it’s important to us that every client feels seen, heard, and respected.
Brand-wise, what I am most proud of is my authentic and genuine commitment to community. CLR Mind Psychiatry was founded out of a deep desire to fill a gap in mental health services, especially in underserved populations. CLR Mind Psychiatry not just a practice; it’s a purpose-driven organization rooted in love, resilience, and the belief that everyone deserves access to quality mental health care.
Whether you’re a parent seeking help for your child, a Veteran processing past experiences, or simply someone looking for support to live a healthier, more balanced life, I am here to walk that path with you.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
If I had to choose one characteristic that’s been most important to my success, it would be authenticity, rooted in compassion. I strive to show up as my true self in every space I enter; whether it’s the clinic, the classroom, or the community. I lead with kindness and a genuine heart because people, especially those in mental health care, can sense when you truly care. That kind of connection can make all the difference in someone’s healing journey.
Since high school, I’ve carried a green book, a simple notebook where I’ve written all of my dreams and accomplishments. I still have it today. It reminds me of where I came from, what I’ve overcome, and the vision I continue to work toward. That book is more than just pages it’s a symbol of faith, persistence, and purpose. Every time I open it, I’m reminded that I’m walking in alignment with the calling on my life.
One of the mothers at my church once told me, “Your warm, beautiful smile is going to get you far.” And now, years later, I’m walking in my purpose helping others heal and doing it with that same smile. Her words stay with me. They’re proof that being true to who you are really does open doors to success.
Authenticity isn’t just a trait it’s a way of life. It’s what connects me to my patients, my community, and my own dreams. And it’s helped me become the woman I am today.
