Community Highlights: Meet Yolimar Perry of Oh Desserts LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yolimar Perry.

Hi Yolimar; thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to introduce yourself.
I was raised in this beautiful artisan town called El Hatillo, Caracas, Venezuela. The perfect town square with many restaurants, a beautiful Church, a quaint library, and our family’s bakery. This makes the town square the ideal place where people of all ages gather and share stories. As a little girl raised in the bakery environment, I would watch my grandma elaborate on these amazing exquisite desserts that, to this day, are a big part of our hometown. Since then, I knew making delicious desserts would be a part of my life. Being in Memphis for a while and sharing with my co-workers, I realized that the desserts and flavors I knew didn’t exist here I knew I wanted to share them with my co-workers. I would bring them deferents types of cakes over time, and one day a co-worker asked me to make them a birthday cake. That moment started 6 years ago, and I am where I am today thanks to them. Spreading the word between them was the key to taking me to the spot I am today, and I’m beyond grateful for that.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a challenging road but an exciting and fun one. As an immigrant who doesn’t speak the same language, that was the first struggle I faced and the most important one I needed to overcome. Other than that, things like processes, laws and different ways of doing business here in the States have been a little complicated, but you can get through once you get into the flow.

We’ve been impressed with Oh Desserts LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Oh, Desserts is a gourmet-style bakery specializing in high-quality products over quantity. Our best-selling desserts are Chocolate Marquesa (a Venezuelan dessert made of layers of Maria cookies and in-house chocolate). Pies and custom birthday or wedding cakes. Our desserts are out of this earth, and each bite’s flavor hits the spot. Although I am a baker and if I am honest, baking anything and having that creative spark makes me happy. Especially when my clients send me messages or tag me on their posts saying how satisfied they are. That is what makes it all worth it.

What sets us apart from others is the style of desserts and the attention to the details that go into every product. We offer a variety of desserts that come from gourmet cakes, pies, and pastries to custom birthday or wedding cakes to make the day even more special. We are proud of how far we are getting in a short period and the passion and love we put into everything we do that keeps clients coming back and recommending us to others.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
As a little girl raised in a bakery environment, I would watch and help my grandma to elaborate on these fantastic desserts. During playtime, I enjoyed making cakes out of anything I had in front of me and decorating them with little flowers from our garden. Growing up, I was always interested in artistic things like painting, decorating, and everything that involved my hands and crafting, so I went to University and studied Graphic Design. This career helps me nowadays to design and style my cakes and desserts. I also enjoy going to new places and trying fresh food and desserts with a good cup of coffee.
