Conversations with Alex Flores

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Flores

Hi Alex, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For as long as I could remember I was always the friend everyone came to for hair and makeup help. From the perfect braids on a hot summer day to getting my brother’s girl friends all glammed up for prom in my childhood bedroom. My laptop screen time would be comical from all the hours spent watching makeup, hair tutorials, and fashion videos on YouTube.
Fast forward to graduating Cosmetology school in 2015, working at a Blow Dry and Style house for 6 years in my home state of Illinois, starting over here in Memphis, and building up my name to then run my own beauty business full time.
It’s so true when they say social media has such a strong impact. I was able to network and create such an amazing support system within the vendor community here.
All it really took was sliding into every photographer/makeup artist/and wedding venues DM’s I could find at the time 🤭
Who knew one day this “hobby” would be my most fulfilling career path.
Today, I’m grateful to be working with the sweetest clients, on bride’s most special day, and becoming besties with every face I get to “paint” on and hair I get to “play” with!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely smoother than some of the roads out here in Memphis…haha!
I’ve always believed in the phrase “No risk, no reward”, while scary, you’ll never know until you decide okay, today’s the day I’m doing this for me no matter the outcome
I think the biggest struggle (as an introvert) was having to put myself out there again and rebuild a clientele in a new city.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a 10 year Licensed Cosmetologist from the west suburbs of Chicago, who specializes in Event Hair Styling and Soft glam makeup and the face behind “Unfiltered AF” on instagram
I’m probably known for being “so quick” or working efficiently when providing services
I was taught to work on the 30/45 minute and a lot of the time people are impressed at how fast I can do an updo or a full face of makeup.
I’m most proud of all of the bigger video or photoshoots I’ve gotten the opportunity to work on.
I love being in the same room as other creatives and collaborating on a product is so much fun.
I think what sets me apart from others is my ability to work so well under pressure and can adapt to any situation. I feel you can always count on me to lighten the mood and be comforting.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My advice to anyone is to have a say yes attitude. You never know what project can come your way by simply saying yes to the right person.
Reaching out to other vendors is huge even if it’s just introducing yourself and your brand.
Content days have worked really well for me my first couple years, you get to meet new creatives within the industry and some cool pics to post on your page!
