Hidden Gems: Meet Celia Newman of She Got Game League

Today we’d like to introduce you to Celia Newman.

Hi Celia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a former college athlete and I started She Got Game League because I saw the void in women’s sports in the city of Memphis, TN and across other major cities. There was not a space for women to continue to pursue their professional dreams of playing pro in a supportive environment, nor exposure of women’s basketball. The women who participate in our league are moms, wives, and everyday workers who deserve a space to enjoy and excel in sports. I wanted to offer support and resources to help them overcome barriers and achieve success. She Got Game League is my purpose and passion and I truly wanted to give back to our community and be a changemaker in women’s sports and inspire young girls and women everywhere.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road at all and there have been so many times I wanted to give up. We have had struggling years where we were barely staying afloat but I stayed persistent because I couldn’t give up on these women that participate in She Got Game League. They truly give me purpose and keep me motivated to continue to push the league and grow to bigger heights each season!! This year has by far been the best growth year for She Got Game League as we have gotten more exposure and more supporters involved as we entered our 10th season.

We’ve been impressed with She Got Game League, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
She Got Game Women’s League is a women’s basketball league based out of Memphis, TN and currently has expanded to Nashville, Little Rock, Denver, Houston, Chicago and Dallas. We are not only a basketball league, but an organization dedicated to the empowerment of women and we focus on exposing and encouraging female basketball players, school age to pro, in the areas of basketball, as well as providing them personal and career development tools to excel at the next level. Our mission is to create a support system and platform to give young women and girls the tools necessary to achieve their goals. I am most proud of the growth we have seen the past 6 years and how we continue to expand and show up for women in multiple cities.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love how creative and inspiring Memphis is! Black and Minority owned small businesses are everywhere in Memphis and the entrepreneur environment has grown tremendously with way more support of each other! I love to collaborate on projects and in the beginning it was very hard to get support but now as we have grown the support has come from everywhere:)
