Today we’d like to introduce you to Ted Mattis.
Hi Ted, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In 1990, after years of significant trials, both familial and personal, and my own journey through the healing process and consequential recovery, I was moved to begin a life of service helping people heal and recover from the pain of personal and relational dysfunction. I acquired two Master’s Degrees in 1997 (MAMFT) and 1998 (MDiv) and began this journey of service within a large church congregation in Orlando, FL. After 10 years in 3 locations, I decided that I could better serve my community in one on one interactions in private practice. I worked for a local counseling group in Germantown, Heartlife, as the senior male counselor specializing in Marriage and Family Therapy with a specialty in working with Couples and Families struggling with some form of addiction. After 12 years there it was time to make my own way and, with the encouragement of my beautiful wife, I established Ted Mattis Counseling PLLC.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not necessarily! I have always been pulled to serving and helping people work through difficult personal issues. I have had some bumps along the way, especially with disingenuous superiors. And, then, of course, there are the trials of establishing and marketing your own practice- how to operate the business side of a practice as well as enlarging my referral base. I have been very grateful to have had a consistent base of referrals.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My business exists to serve the surrounding community with clinical excellence that is rooted in sound biblical principles in a compassionate and nonjudgmental environment. I am trained in Family Systems and work with individuals, couples and families. People dealing with relational struggles, infidelity, communication, parenting concerns, Family of Origin issues, addiction and recovery, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, life transition and adjustment, emotional and spiritual abuse/confusion and other life struggles will find help, tools and care with me. I am probably best known for my work with couples in various states of development and disruption. What perhaps sets me apart is that I have had 3 decades of experience clinically and have also been through three decades of tremendous trials personally and have grown through and landed on my own feet. I have hope personally through whatever trials and I believe that hope is the single most crucial experience I offer in whatever trial. What I would like readers to know is that I am a Christian but not the typical stereo-typed Christian. I have been around the proverbial block a few times! I lead with compassion, understanding and a selflessness that is not ‘of me.’
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
The best advice I have is to get yourself out there in industry functions and maintain contact with peers in the industry. There are a plethora of opportunities in the area as well as online that serve to develop ongoing support networks for therapists. Whether it is the Mid South therapist Facebook site or simply contacting local practitioners, these have been very helpful to me personally.
