Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Allen.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was a struggling single mom barely making ends meet, after leaving a 19 year troubled marriage. I am a nurturer by nature, and I like to help people. All my life whenever a friend or family member would say their neck or back hurt, I would automatically reach over and massage them. I did this for a friend at church and thought nothing of it. A month or so later that friend came up to me and asked if I had ever thought of becoming a massage therapist. I replied no why would I do that? She then proceeded to give me a few reasons why I should consider it. Honestly, I gave it no more thought until about another month later when she broached the subject again with me. This time she had facts and figures of why I should consider it and she reminded me that she believed I had a talent. After that I decided to look into going back to school to become a massage therapist. When I got accepted into Concorde Career College, I was both nervous and excited. It was one of the hardest years of my life. I worked 60 hours a week at night and on weekends, I went to school full time during the day. I got to see my youngest son for a little bit between school and work. I am thankful for great parents who helped me watch him when I worked nights. (My oldest son was grown.) I graduated with honors. A chain spa had offered me a job and a sign on bonus while I was still in school. After I graduated, I took the MBLEX and got my state license. I worked for that spa for a year and will always be grateful for that first job in my career. I learned a lot there and enjoyed the people I worked with! I then moved on to another local chain day spa, I enjoyed them also. After about 5 months there I was offered a position at another award-winning spa, Midtown Massage & Bodywork. Working for Larrie Rodriguez was phenomenal! I love being a massage therapist. I feel like I found my 2nd calling. (My first calling was being a mom. That is best job!) After working for Larrie for 2 and a half years, I was given the opportunity to buy Midtown Massage & Bodywork. On Dec 29, 2020, I became the proud owner. I love all the therapists that work with me. We have the best team ever! I was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in 2021. In 2023 I had to miss months of work for my treatments, but our team kept us going. Midtown Massage stayed open because of each of them! Thank you, Nikia, Kiana, Mickey, Michele, Kay, Von and Lauren! They are the best. I told my doctors while in treatment to just get me back to working because I love what I do. I love our clients, and I am happy to say that even though I am not in remission I am now back to seeing my clients. I have been very blessed. Massage has changed my life and my son’s life for the better. I was able to provide for him until he was grown and moved out on his own. I am also proud to say that Midtown Massage & Bodywork was voted best day spa in Tennessee in 2025.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We are an award-winning spa. We specialize in treating people in pain or people who are stressed. I am most proud of our customer service and the abilities of each of our therapists. All of our therapists go above and beyond in the continuing education training and take unique classes to set themselves apart from other therapists. Several of them have also won individual awards as massage therapists. I love seeing the results and improvement in our clients.
How do you think about happiness?
Being a massage therapist makes me happy because I actually am able to help relieve people’s pain.
