Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Nelson. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Amber Nelson is the CEO and founder of Because of Amber, an ICU Nurse and a native Memphian. She is known for her gracious demeanor, conservative sense of style, and kindness. She studied at the University of Memphis, where she earned a Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing Management in 2015. After working for a Fortune 500 company and feeling underwhelmed, Amber realized that she was not living her purpose. She knew in her heart that healthcare was her calling because not only had she spent two and a half years studying Biology at the U of M, but she also loved helping others and was fascinated by the science of the human body. Amber made the decision to return to school in 2017 to pursue a Nursing degree. She attended The University of Tennessee Health Science Center for an accelerated nursing program and graduated with honors obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2018. Currently, she is enjoying her career as a traveling ICU Nurse.
During the height of the COVID pandemic, Amber worked tirelessly away from her family and friends and witnessed firsthand the turmoil caused by COVID. This challenge left her yearning to invest some energy in a different creative direction. That’s when she founded Because of Amber (BOA), an online boutique helping women show off without showing everything.
She is a firm believer in Christ and grew up in church, which is one of the many reasons for her values and desire for dressing modestly. Amber believes authenticity is the key to success for anyone hoping to start their own business. Beyond the work, she is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
When she’s not working, she enjoys spending time with her family, working out, traveling, and reading Cartel fiction novels.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not,what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The hardest part was getting the courage to jump into entrepreneurship and not having directions on where to go. After researching, learning, and exploring my realm of business the journey became easier.
The work behind BOA started early Summer 2021 and we officially launched in October of that same year. Simply “starting” is always challenging. So many doubts and thoughts of what could go wrong initially hold you back, but once you decide to “just do it”, the process is very rewarding! Of course, there have been many days where I am tired and lack creativity, but knowing I created something that others love inspires me to keep growing and going.
I continue to learn every day, but I appreciate where my journey will take me and with diligence and hard work, I’ve been able to see my way through.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am mostly known for being a traveling ICU nurse, but each day my brand is expanding and I’m now becoming known for Because of Amber. Fashion has become my passion and has created an outlet for me after dealing with so many emotions stemming from the COVID pandemic.
I am most proud of my faith in God, tenacity, and individuality that has allowed me to become the successful woman I am today. My boutique, Because of Amber, is merely a reflection of who I am. I’ve always admired women with class, integrity, and a great sense of style.
I wholeheartedly believe that when you look good, you feel good, and my goal is to make women feel beautiful while dressing modestly! The styles I choose to feature in my boutique allow women to show off without showing everything and that is what sets me apart from others.
How do you define success?
I view success as a journey. It’s a journey of achieving personal goals, experiencing opportunities, and being a light to others along the way. I love the quote “When you’re in your own lane, there’s no traffic.” Success is what fulfills you and is not defined by others.
Many businesses measure success by the amount of money they earn, but my success is measured by being an inspiration to all. For example, I was blessed to make over six figures in my first year as a boutique owner and I have influenced many individuals to follow their dream of becoming an entrepreneur. My journey is evidence that you can do all things through Christ!
