Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Vaughn.
Hi Angela, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story? Well, I am from Memphis, TN where we are known for GRINDING. Growing up, I was a tomboy who played sports and was involved in several activities. I never was an arts and crafts person. I hated it actually but I loved fashion. Yes, a tomboy who had a passion for fashion. As I grew into my adulthood, that passion turned into decorating and planning events.
In 2015, I graduated from the Memphis Police Academy where we were taught to “pay attention to details”. Little did I know how much that lesson prepared me for the future. In 2020, I graduated with honors from Bethel University with a Bachelor’s in Science in Organizational Leadership. See, God was already working a plan out for me during this journey.
In Spring 2021, I became a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, INC. Omicron Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Memphis, TN. This is where I truly began to blossom. I was tasked to complete an arts and crafts project, and you guessed it, I hated it! My anxiety was through the roof and I just knew it was going to look awful. A handsome and wise man, George told me that I AM an artist and that it is within ME. I completed the project and it tuned out wonderfully.
In fall 2021, I had the bright idea that I wanted a cane. Not only did I want a cane, but I wanted to make it myself. If you know anything about me, I am picky. So, I called my VP Dominique who is also my mentor. She told me to go for it and that I had her full support! I had no idea how to wrap a cane but I worked hard to perfect my craft and I did it!
I had to look at every cane as if it was a wall that needed decorating and here I am, the owner of Insane Wraps.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This has definitely not been a smooth road. Being a young black woman who is a BOSS can be intimidating. I often get asked how is it that I learned skill so fast and perfected my craft. My answer is simple, “Pay attention to detail and lead with passion”.
Being diagnosed with PTSD, depression, and severe anxiety is and was the most challenging part with me being outgoing and the life of the party. It was my family, friends, Sorors, and best friends, Kristian, Jarvis, Julia, and Ashely who believed in me every step of the way, thank you.
Honestly, conducting this interview with such a prestigious magazine was a challenge all on its own but here we are. I am truly grateful for this opportunity.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am the owner of Insane Wraps. We customize Greek canes for Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, INC and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, INC members. We provide probate canes, stepping canes, and crossing gift canes.
We specialize in “details”. If you ask for it, we make it happen! We get to know our customer’s personalities and we cater their cane to them. I am most proud of starting a legacy for my two handsome and talented sons, Jalen and Dorian.
It brings me joy to see how much I inspire them to believe in themselves and to never accept no as an answer. My boys do not know this but they truly inspire me to get up and GRIND every day.
