Today we’d like to introduce you to Demi Blvck.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
The base of my origin story is simple. What I ended up becoming from it still surprises me. I started loving fashion in high school. At the time, I still didn’t feel like I’d ever be a fashion designer or work in the fashion industry at all. I honestly didn’t have the desire.
It wasn’t until my early 20s as a college student making minimum wage, which was $7.50 at the time, that I would start to like designer fashion. I obviously couldn’t afford it at that pay rate, then the lightbulb went off to try to create it! This led to enrolling at YouTube university! Of course, I mean this sarcastically, but I learned a lot from studying videos.
The first thing I ever did was rework sleeves from a T-shirt I bought from Walmart. For the first year that was pretty much all I did, rework sleeves, make men’s T-shirts, or androgynous designs. Demi Blvck wasn’t even the original name of my clothing line. It was “Big Impressions Clothing”.
I know what you’re thinking, and I don’t know what I was thinking either. Fast forward to today, Big Impressions Clothing has become Demi Blvck, it’s totally different from where I started, and I make more women’s clothing. I never imagined I would ever be good enough to make dresses or mostly anything I’m designing today.
Truthfully, I was just hoping to master making t-shirts from scratch, and I did along with an entire repertoire of skills. I’m grateful.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of my biggest hurdles starting out was trying to target the right customer/audience for my brand. Over the years, I’ve discovered my target audience. Once, I knew who I was designing for, selling my pieces became easier.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in print matching, and now more recently beading. I’m most proud of my ability to adapt to current trends, while still having the ability to feel like myself.
It is extremely important to me that my designs truly represent what Demi Blvck is at its core. Sexy, yet, luxurious, but emotional.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I’m very big on health and mindset. Mastering self and emotion has been such a growth journey for me.
Since I’ve grown, I believe there is so much power in discipline and self-control, so I’m always tuned into men’s mental health, and financial literacy podcasts.
At the moment, I’m reading self by Don Miguel Ruiz Jr.
