Today we’d like to introduce you to Rosetta “DJ Zetta” Jackson.
Hi DJ Zetta, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Wow, where do it start? I have always been surrounded by musical influences my entire life. My mom and dad are deeply rooted in music production and songwriting. I started teaching myself how to DJ as early as 2015 after purchasing my first DJ board which was a “Numark Mixtrack Pro 3”. I spent countless hours practicing and downloading music! I remember being in my room practicing in front of my speaker on the floor getting frustrated and constantly telling myself “I’m going to be one of the best DJs in the world”. I was super anxious and nervous to DJ in public that I didn’t book my first gig until towards the end of that year. I will never forget my first event was a gospel concert and I was SO NERVOUS! I ended up doing a good job and was booked for another event. From then on I continued to expand, spend time with my craft, and grow as an aspiring female DJ. I got to a point that financially I could afford to purchase my own sound system and I began to book all types of events. The year of 2018 and 2019 had to be the years that my DJ career began to take off and my name began to pick up traction on the campus of the University of Memphis and around the city. I began to break new barriers and set the tone as a female DJ here in Memphis.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not! I have learned SO many lessons over the years. Being a woman in a male dominant industry I’ve come across a few struggles, but I never gave up or let anyone discourage me. One of the hardest things I’ve been through as a DJ is learning the importance of backing up your computer and having a reliable hard drive. In late 2019 I lost ALL my music due to computer complications. I cried for a whole week and was filled with so much hurt. I truly wanted to give up but my loving family and friends wouldn’t let me. I was able to bounce back enough to get back to doing gigs and it’s been a process ever since. I am thankful to my DJ friends DJ Tootz and DJ IB JohnDoe for helping me and sharing music with me to help me bounce back from a low place in my DJ career. Till this day I am still recovering but I have purchased 2 hard drives and I back up my music and computer at least once a week.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
First and foremost, I must do my “well known” introduction for all my supporters. What’s up yall, its ya girl DJ Zetta! I am a well-known female DJ from right here in Memphis, TN. I am an open format DJ and can DJ for a lot of diverse crowds. I’ve DJ’d for wedding, corporate events, private parties and private events. I am the first female Mixshow DJ for “HOT 107.1 Tru Hip Hop” and I was blessed to become a part of the HOT 107.1 team as of this year. Over the years I have been the first female DJ for a lot of well-known events in the southern region. I have had a chance to DJ for Memphis Flyer, Baptist Hospital, Memphis River Parks and more. I am also the official DJ for one of the hardest R&B artists in Memphis, Kendrick P. What sets me apart from other DJs in the city is my passion and high energy for my craft. I absolutely LOVE what I do, I love to create memorable experiences for different crowds, giving people a moment to let them truly enjoy themselves through music. I pride myself in creating a vibe that allows people to dance, laugh, and enjoy being alive for however long that moment is. Music has always been an escape for me, and I am blessed to be able to express myself and create an experience like no other through music!
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Ayyye it’s shoutout time (lol)! First and foremost I want to give a big shoutout to God, my parents Trinette and Daniel, my siblings Jasmine and Daniel Jr, and my entire family for being my motivation to keep going… I want to send a special thanks to my Program Director, DJ Q, for believing in me and making me a part of the Hot 107.1 family. Shoutout to my best friends DJ Tootz for always being there through my entire DJ career. Thank you to my Supreme Epsilon Kappa Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. for being a great support in my journey. Thank you, Kendrick P, for allowing me to be a part of his amazing musical journey! Thank you to Hunter Promotions and DJ Rocksteddy for always pushing me towards greatness daily.
