Rising Stars: Meet Adam David of Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam David

Hi Adam, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I work in advertising as a Copywriter/Creative Director. Somehow, after spending all day in front of a computer writing, I found that being a photographer is my true passion. I’m originally from New York City, and after a breakup, I started taking long walks out around the city at night and found myself taking pictures on my iPhone. I recognized that I had a capacity/talent for it, that I was able to “say something” with my pictures.

In 2020 I moved to Memphis and found an environment rich for the the kinds of photos I like to take. Memphians are unique and interesting, Beale Street and Tom Lee Park are excellent environments for the genre of street photography, and Mississippi and Arkansas provide interesting rural landscapes to document.

And it must be working: out of the blue Fonthill Media reached out to me and asked if I’d like them to publish a book of my Memphis photos, which is due to come out in February of 2025!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Working in advertising is never a smooth road. It can be fun, but it’s a lot of work, and you have to keep doing it over and over again. Frequently, I feel like I’m on a hamster wheel.

Photography, on the other hand, has always been an absolute joy. It’s a meditative practice for me and I’m communicating on behalf of myself, not some company that I wouldn’t know or care about if not for the fact I’m employed to do so.

Likewise, when I sell a photograph to someone…just to know that one of my captures resonates enough for them that they’ll hang it in their home…what could be more gratifying?

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a photographer. I mainly do street photography, but also enjoy capturing rural, desolate landscapes. I never related to the Instagram accounts that post images of food or exotic vacations or “LIVING MY BEST LIFE”. For me, my pictures have more grit and emotional resonance.

I love finding humor and something unique in everyday life.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
Anyone who ever liked one of my Instagram posts – especially early on – deserves credit. Each like and comment encouraged me and confirmed for me that “there’s something there” in my photos.

As far as photographers I admire? Robert Frank, Saul Leiter, Jessica Lange, Genevieve Hafner, Robert Herman are all excellent. I can look at their photos and suddenly feel very centered, calm, and – for lack of a better word – understood.
