Today we’d like to introduce you to Luis Gonzalez “mcfly”
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Luis Gonzalez “McFly”, and I was born in Maracaibo, Venezuela. I come from a family of educators; my mother was a primary school teacher, and my
father was a high school English teacher. I graduated as a Bachelor of Physics and also have
studied electronics, graphic design and Music.
In 2010, I moved to Panama with my wife, and it’s where my two children were born. We lived in Panama for 13 years, and in June 2023, we relocated to
Collierville, TN. Part of my family has been living here for a long time, and we decided to
come to the United States to be together as a family.
I am a person who is passionate about science, the universe, investigating, and explaining
the “whys” of things. In Panama, I worked as a Physics teacher in a high school for 10 years,
and I also had my own business dedicated to website design.I play the guitar and have composed songs.
I founded my own band called Skanamá (@SkanamaMusic), where I composed many of the songs of the Ska, Reggae and Latin Funk genre. I currently teach Spanish and Math at a foundation. I know that language is not a barrier and every day I learn more, I feel that I can contribute my knowledge, culture and experiences to the entire community. In music, I am currently producing a solo album (@McFlySKa) where I explore different genres such as Country, HipHop, Blues, Reggae and Ska. My family, music and science are the perfect mix in my life.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey hasn’t always been smooth, but each challenge has been an opportunity to grow and learn. Moving from Venezuela to Panama in 2010, my wife and I were navigating life in a new country, adapting to a different culture, and building a life from scratch. In Panama, I worked as a Physics teacher for a decade and started a web design business, but balancing both was challenging. Teaching demands a lot of energy and commitment, and simultaneously running a business required long hours and perseverance.
Starting my band, Skanamá, was another milestone, but it came with its own struggles. Finding the right musicians, creating our unique sound, and gaining recognition in a new country were uphill tasks. There were also financial challenges as we self-produced our music, but it taught me resilience and brought me closer to my passion for music.
In 2023, moving to Collierville, TN, was a big transition. While it was a positive change, re-establishing ourselves in a new place, adjusting to new educational and work systems, and helping my children integrate have been challenging. But this move also opened doors for new opportunities and experiences. Through all these transitions, the support of my family, my love for science and music, and a passion for teaching have kept me grounded and motivated.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My work and interests span several areas, but they all revolve around one constant: curiosity and a passion for learning and sharing knowledge. As a physicist, teacher, musician, and podcaster, I dedicate myself to exploring the universe, science, and the mysteries of the world. Currently, in the United States, I teach Spanish and mathematics at a foundation, and before moving to Tennessee, I taught physics at a high school in Panama for ten years. Teaching allows me to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and share my passion for understanding the “why” behind things.
I also founded a podcast called “Aliens de Medianoche” (Midnight Aliens), where I explore topics related to science, fiction, mysteries, and unexplained phenomena. This project allows me to express myself and connect with an audience that shares my fascination for the unknown. It’s a space where I combine my interests in science and mystery in an accessible and entertaining way.
As a musician, I’m known for my band Skanamá, where I’ve composed songs in genres like ska, reggae, and Latin funk. I’m also working on a solo album that explores various styles, from country to hip-hop and blues, a mix that reflects my influences and evolution as a musician. Music is an essential part of my life and a way to express my ideas and emotions.
What I am most proud of is creating spaces where people can learn and find inspiration, whether through teaching, music, or the podcast. What sets me apart is my versatility and my constant desire to learn and reinvent myself. I am someone who has made curiosity a way of life, and my goal is always to contribute—whether in the classroom, on stage, or through a microphone.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I think that good luck has always been on my side. I see it as looking closely at where the opportunities for growth are and focusing on them. Good results may take time to come, but they always come with patience and perseverance.
