Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Neal.
Hi Kayla, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
Well, it all started in 2015. My aunt had a wig that needed to be revamped, & I felt like I could do it so I did!
Everyone was so impressed by the wig so I felt very accomplished. My pawpaw, who I just lost 3 weeks ago, told me that I was going to make a lot of money doing hair. At the time, I thought to myself ”what is he talking about?” Being a cosmetologist was something that I considered but I did not think that I would take it seriously. That same year, I had to do my own hair for my birthday. After that, I was sold!
I made up my mind that I was going to cosmetology school after I graduated high school. I enrolled in TCAT in the fall of 2017, I completed the program in March of 2019. By June 2019, I was a fully licensed cosmetologist at the age of 20. I started out dealing with wigs and weaves, but over the course of time, I started working with locs. One day, I was taking my hair down and I accidentally cut a patch in the front of my head.
That same night, I found myself mixing ingredients to make a growth grease to grow it back, shortly after that, my growth oil came along. My brother bought a jar and within a year he went from having a fade to locs, which made me keep going with the products.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One thing about it, most entrepreneurs only highlight the good parts of their journey. They don’t tell you about the slow weeks, or maybe slow months that you will have.
I remember being in cosmetology school and I wrecked my car. I was so close to giving up, but I was blessed with great people in my life such as Travis Saunders, who would come from Arkansas to Whitehaven every day to pick me up for school.
My good friend, Christian, took up the job once Travis graduated. If it was not for those two, I would not have finished. I lost both of my grandparents back to back, one last year and one this year, and it has been the hardest thing for me to get up and keep going, but I do.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a licensed cosmetologist but I specialize in locs And I’m known for being a loctician. I’m most proud of my product line, which includes my Super Hold Retwist gel, Retwist kits, and more. I think my ability to work under pressure sets me apart from others. Whatever needs to be done, I can get it done!
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5-10 years, I see myself being one of the top loctician in the world. My product line will be global and everybody is going to be using my products. Do I see myself in Memphis? Absolutely not, lol.
