Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Nathan
Hi Erica, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As a child, I had the privilege of watching my grandmother provide hairstyling services to our community in the Clayborn Homes projects where we lived.
Inspired by her passion and skill, I knew I wanted to follow in her footsteps. I was mesmerized by the way she pressed hair bone straight and created beautiful ring curls, leaving every client who visited our kitchen feeling satisfied and confident.
This early exposure ignited my interest in cosmetology. At just 10 years old, I began practicing on my friends’ hair in our kitchen—experimenting with Kool-Aid to achieve vibrant colors and cutting their bangs with kitchen scissors. By 16, I had built an entire clientele at Mama’s house, though she often fussed about the hair left everywhere—forgetting she had once done the same. I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to refine my skills further. I pursued cosmetology at Melrose High School, where I completed most of my state board requirements. I then attended Pazzaz Beauty School, where I graduated and obtained my license. Soon after, I became a full-time hairstylist at Ebony and Ivory under Chery Muhammad, where I received intensive training and was honored as “Hairstylist of the Year.”
In 1995, at just 20 years old, I opened my first hair salon, Erica’s Hair Gallery. Over the years, I’ve moved locations, partnered in a day spa, and even undergone a name change. But here I am, 31 years later, as the proud owner-operator of E. Nathan Hair Studio and E. Nathan Beauty Bar, where I continue to empower others—not just by enhancing their outer beauty, but by uplifting them from within. My goal for every client who sits in my chair is to provide them with an unforgettable experience. God has blessed each of us with a talent, but what sets me apart is the knowledge I share, the anointing in my hands, and my ability to create a top-tier salon experience infused with care and healing.
In addition to hairstyling, I have also developed a deep passion for event planning and design. People often call me a “Jack of all trades,” but I consider myself a creative genius. My journey into event design began 17 years ago when, faced with an unexpected challenge, I had to step in and plan my own event. My planner and designer fell ill the week of my party, leaving me with no choice but to take matters into my own hands. I rented everything I needed, put my creativity to work, and executed a stunning event. That night, so many people asked, “Erica, who did your party?” That moment paved the way for what would become a thriving business, allowing me to design and execute a variety of events—including weddings—bringing my clients’ visions to life.
In January 2018, after years of working from home, I took a bold step and opened my own venue: E. Nathan Design Studio. This space is a testament to my dedication to transforming both spaces and lives, allowing me to continue bringing my creative visions to reality.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not always been a smooth ride. Throughout my journey, I have experienced both growth and setbacks, but I am grateful for the progress I have made with God’s guidance. I’ve had slow seasons, but I recognize that they are a natural part of business. Instead of seeing them as obstacles, I use these moments to revamp, refine my skills, and identify areas for personal growth.
There have been times when I had to work alone due to financial constraints. Moments when I doubted my own abilities and creativity. Times when financial struggles led to overdue bills. However, by dedicating my businesses to God, I have full confidence that His involvement ensures success. He has promised to supply my every need, and with that assurance, I know my business is secure. I remain committed to trusting the process and standing firm on His promises.
Although challenges arise, I remind myself that I am capable and continue moving forward. My husband and daughter also play a vital role in our business, helping me stay focused and grounded. Having a strong support system is essential—it lifts you up during difficult times and keeps you motivated through every challenge.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a driven entrepreneur and author, I am dedicated to empowering others and spreading positivity. My background in the beauty industry has sharpened my skills as a hairstylist and owner of E. Nathan Hair Studio and E. Nathan Beauty Bar. My devotion to my faith and passion for inspiring others are contagious, and that fills me with pride.
As an ordained minister, I use my salon as more than just a place for beauty—it serves as a platform for spiritual nourishment and growth, which sets me apart. My unwavering commitment to fostering positive change has led to the creation of the Standard Women’s Empowerment Network, The Discovery Zone Mentorship Program, Women Who Brunch, The Pink Table Salon Talk, and The Prayer Clinic.
My entrepreneurial spirit is evident in my ownership of E. Nathan Design Studio, E. Nathan Hair Studio, and E. Nathan Beauty Bar. I am also the author of Put God in Your Business, a thought-provoking 28-day journal.
As a devoted wife, mother, and serial entrepreneur, my journey is a testament to resilience, faith, and determination.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
To be honest, I do not believe in luck. My trust is in God’s favor. I am fully convinced that what He has destined for me is mine, and I stand firmly on that belief. When challenges arise, I do not see them as bad luck but rather as manifestations of God’s protection.
