Lakiva, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It all started at a Kevin Hart comedy show! It was the first time I saw a photo booth at an event. So many people were gathered around the photo booth taking photos and having such a good time. My birthday party was coming up and I was already trying to think of ways to make it a memorable experience for people. After the show, I went home and started researching photo booths. It wasn’t a phenomenon like it is today, but I knew this could be something big. I ordered my first photo booth and tested it out at my birthday party. It was hit! I loved seeing my friends and family enjoy themselves at the photo booth. I believed that this was a form of entertainment that should be at all events. Honestly, I’m naturally a risk taker so I didn’t think twice about turning this new found passion of mine into a business. I created business cards, attended trade shows, weddings expos, events of my close friends etc in order to get the word out about my new business. I also used social media to my advantage. This is truly how I got my start. I was consistent in making sure everyone knew about Selfie Memphis. Over time, Selfie Memphis has continued to grow which has lead me to amazing opportunities and a lot of repeat clients!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all! Jump starting a business isn’t easy. I started from the ground up. I had no connections and or insight on what life as an entrepreneur entails. There were (and still are) plenty of sleepless nights. I financed my first photo booth so I started my business in the negative! I had a 9-5 in the beginning so balancing a job and a new business was difficult. I’m also a mother and a wife so that adds another layer. A lot of people do not discuss the financial strain that can come with being a business owner. As entrepreneurs, there is an uncertainty in income that I believe we should start discussing more because it can be bumpy. I’ve also had to figure out how to scale my business, hire and fire employees and remind myself that it’s ok to take time off.

Selfie Memphis is a photo and video marketing agency. We specialize in guest experiences via a multitude of Photo Booths, custom builds and content creation. Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My family. I have two boys and a husband. They really are a light in my life and give me purpose. My children are so proud of me so that alone makes me so happy. The unconditional love and support means so much to me.
