Check Out Adam Shaw’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Shaw.

Hi Adam, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Memphis and went to Central High school in Midtown to study with Bill Hicks. He helped me get a scholarship to art school in Cleveland, Ohio and Edinburgh College of Art. After graduating, I returned to Memphis and set up a studio on Broad Ave. I sold my paintings and drawings at a gallery in Birmingham, Alabama and in Memphis.

I am also interested in illustration and have created several comic books with various other creators. I was a member of Mid-South Cartoonists Association (MSCA) where I found good friends and a lot of inspiration from other artists.

I am currently living in Springdale, Arkansas continuing to paint and illustrate books. I am also showing at Abend gallery in Denver and Fenix Gallery here in Fayetteville.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I guess my biggest struggles have been dealing with rejection and pushing thru and finding my people. You’ve got to find people who support and encourage you. I’ve spent a lot of time trying to impress people who never liked the kind of work I did in the first place. That was a hard lesson.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I describe my work as figurative, imaginative-realism and fantasy illustration. I work in oil, acrylic and some digital illustration. The work I’m most proud of are large scale mythological paintings and the 100 page graphic novel I created with my wife called Bloodstream.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I’d say starting out, I owe a lot to Bill Hicks at Central. Also the MSCA in Memphis, the artists of Paradiso Studio in Seattle, Jake Meeks in Memphis, comic artist, Martheus Wade, Smart School online, but most of all, my wife and muse, Penelope.
