Check Out Angelique Sloan’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelique Sloan.

Hi Angelique, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hola! I’m Angelique! – Founder of ShopMucho! I’m a proud graduate from Memphis College of Art with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Digital Media and Palomar College with an Associate of Arts in Fashion Design.
With dreams of owning a unique boutique, I created my own version of a Mexican market inspired by my family’s Mexican background (dad’s side) mixed with festive boutique trends and local art- and that is how ShopMucho was born!

My business’s main goal is to support as many small businesses as I can in my shop creating a unique shopping experience. I am half Mexican from my father’s side. Growing up I was in love with my family’s culture but being raised as a Gonzalez that didn’t speak Spanish, I learned fast that I was not truly accepted by either Mexican or Caucasian communities, being teased for either not being “Mexican” enough or “white” enough. I decided that I would not let that stop me from sharing my passion and my family’s culture that I love so much. My shop is a mix of me, A modern Mexican mix of traditional items you would see at a Mexican market alongside trendy boho clothing, accessories, home decor, and local art. My main goal is to show how much I embrace my culture and the cultures of others by showing people the beauty and details that go into each handmade item.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have had my shop for going on 6 years. I started out online and now I also own a brick & mortar store in downtown Memphis alongside my cousin’s bakery, called Prima’s Bakery + Boutique. I still run my entire shop solo, I do everything myself; product photography & modeling, website, social media, buying, shipping online orders, marketing, design, etc. So, yes I have struggled to juggle everything on my own with hardly any time off. But I love what I do, and I hope to have the means to hire some help in the future.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
ShopMucho aka Mucho /mooCHō/ is a very small business that embraces all makers, markets, and brands we love, big and small, with the main focus on Latin-owned businesses and products as well as local Memphis makers. We are inspired by the Latin culture and styling it in a modern way. The goal of Mucho is to offer a large collection of unique styles to the online community and locally to the Memphis, TN area. We love authentic, we love handmade, we love trends, and we love quirk. Oh and… We LOVE tacos!! MUCHO equals love and A LOT of it!

What’s next?
My plans for the future would be to hire a team so I can work directly with my vendors in Mexico, hire professional marketing help to gain more awareness for my shop & website, update my design software to create original art, & start my own line of Mexican-inspired clothing & accessories.
