Check Out Dontrell Coleman’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dontrell Coleman.

Dontrell Coleman

Hi Dontrell, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Dontrell Coleman, I’m a passionate portrait photographer based in Horn Lake, MS. My creative journey began in 2013 when I started as a graphic designer under the name 92GFX. That world taught me the power of visual storytelling, but I couldn’t have predicted how it would lay the foundation for my true passion.

In 2020, during the quiet, uncertain times of the COVID-19 pandemic, I stumbled into photography. What started with a Canon Rebel T6—a camera that had been sitting in my closet for over three years—became something much greater. Having no formal training I dove headfirst into learning and teaching myself photography through countless hours on YouTube.

As I honed my craft, I began working with models, creative directors, and even notable companies like Izzy & Liv. It was through these experiences that I developed a love for branding photography. I saw firsthand how my work helped new models take the first step in their careers, and that realization sparked an enduring passion for helping others find their footing in creative industries.

Today, I focus on providing services that empower and uplift my clients. My offerings include:

Modeling Digitals with a complimentary digital comp card, designed to help aspiring talent break into the industry. Branding Photography, where I collaborate with businesses and individuals to craft compelling visual identities. Budget Lifestyle Shoots for low-income families, ensuring that everyone has access to beautiful memories regardless of their financial situation.
Despite my growth as a photographer, I still work weekends to support my family as I strive for life-changing opportunities in this field. Every day, I’m reminded that this journey—while not easy—is worth every step.

From a Canon Rebel T6 collecting dust to empowering others through my lens, my story is a testament to resilience, passion, and the belief that everyone has the potential to create something meaningful.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My photography journey has been a roller coaster ride. I struggle with consistency when it comes to social media content, and I don’t always have the time to create the way I want. As I approach my fifth year, I am still learning who my audience is. I am also unlearning a lot of mistakes I made on the business side of photography.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a photographer who specializes in modeling digital, business headshots for entrepreneurs. I want to be known for branding photography, but what I am known for is quality work. I think the way I look at the shot sets me apart from others. The way I see the shot in my head before I take it is a skill that I think is unique to me. The journey is what I am most proud of. I came a long way and invested so much into this industry.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I’m a creative vibe with a passion for music, especially the music of the 90s and 2000s. When it comes to taking photographs, I love shooting anything that comes in front of my lens, especially if it involves the culture. But my favorite subjects are branding shoots. For these shoots, I love using vibrant color schemes that include primary and secondary colors. That’s a very important part of the planning process for me.
