Check Out Emily Guenther’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Guenther.

Hi Emily, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My husband, Stephen, and I own The Broom Closet metaphysical store. The Broom Closet first opened its doors in 2014 with a clear intention: to serve the Mid-South’s alternative spirituality community by creating a welcoming, inclusive space for exploration, education, and connection. From the beginning, our vision was to offer a metaphysical store that honored diverse spiritual paths while providing a safe and affirming environment for all who entered.

What began in a cozy cottage near the University of Memphis quickly became a vibrant hub for learning, sharing, and spiritual growth. Over the past decade, The Broom Closet has grown and expanded multiple times—now proudly operating in Downtown Memphis and Jackson, TN—while continuing to foster community, celebrate spiritual diversity, and support seekers at every stage of their journey.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning a small business brings both unique challenges and meaningful opportunities. At The Broom Closet, we’ve been fortunate to experience unwavering support from our neighbors and the broader community. Since opening our doors, we’ve felt welcomed and embraced—even as a metaphysical store in the South—by individuals who value inclusivity, curiosity, and spiritual diversity.

While our journey has been largely positive, recent years have introduced new complexities, particularly around navigating tariffs and sourcing quality products. Balancing these shifts while maintaining our commitment to everyday low prices has required creativity, adaptability, and a deep understanding of our customers’ needs. It’s an ongoing learning process, but one we approach with integrity and care.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Broom Closet is proud to be the Mid-South’s leading metaphysical store, serving a diverse and growing community of spiritual seekers. Our mission is to support individuals on their spiritual journeys by providing access to the tools, resources, and knowledge they need to learn, grow, and thrive.

We honor a wide range of spiritual traditions, which is reflected in our expansive inventory. From gemstones and crystals to candles, books, conjure supplies, tarot and oracle decks, statuary, home décor, incense, herbs, and unique gifts—we strive to offer something for everyone. Our commitment to accessibility means we maintain everyday low prices without compromising quality or variety.

Beyond retail, The Broom Closet is known for its inclusive atmosphere and spiritual services. We offer tarot readings, aura and chakra analyses, Reiki sessions, sound baths, and other spiritual offerings designed to support healing, insight, and personal empowerment. Whether someone is just beginning their path or deepening an existing practice, we’re here to help them feel seen, supported, and inspired.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The spiritual industry is poised for some powerful transformations over the next 5–10 years, driven by generational shifts, digital innovation, and a growing emphasis on wellness, ethics, and personalization.

We’re witnessing a powerful convergence between the spiritual and the mainstream, and I expect that trend to accelerate in the coming years. As more people seek meaning, healing, and connection, the demand for spiritual content and metaphysical products continues to grow. My hope is that this evolution will help dissolve lingering stigmas around practices like tarot, Reiki, and energy work—making them more widely accepted as part of everyday wellness.
Since the pandemic, our community has shifted toward a deeper emphasis on self-care and emotional nourishment. We’ve seen a rise in interest around products and services that foster comfort, safety, and holistic well-being—from herbs and teas to bath salts, soaps, and ritual tools. It’s a beautiful reminder that spirituality isn’t just about transcendence—it’s also about tending to the body, heart, and home.
