Check Out Kayla Smith’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Smith.

Hi Kayla, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Hello, I am Kayla Janelle of Kayla Janelle Artistry!

I am a self-taught makeup artist from North Memphis, I grew up in a new Chicago neighborhood. My whole childhood I was pretty much a tomboy from walking up and down Firestone avenue street to my grandad car shop daily to now owning my own suite at K2 Hair Studio and doing makeup daily.

I give prompts to my parents & grandma for raising me right! Now, I never was into makeup until I moved to Atlanta, GA my second semester of 7th Grade my mom got severely ill which caused me to learn how to do my own hair and care for my younger sister (Lucy) I knew then that beauty was my passion.

Moving forward to high school, I took a cosmetology class at Maxwell HS of Technology in my 11th-grade year and started doing hair & makeup. I continued my journey of hair and makeup for the rest of high school. I remember I had a client, I was doing her hair while trying to tend to my sister and cook and I set the kitchen on fire trying to slay her hair. I was so dedicated to doing her hair I forgot I was cooking.

In 2016, I graduated from Central Gwinnett HS & moved back home to Memphis, TN. I started selling lashes, I always wanted to get into the beauty industry and sell cosmetics back then, and now fast forward I own my own cosmetics line “IT GIRL COSMETICS” selling lipglosses with matching lip liners available online we are also dropping new items on June 2022!!!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Most definitely NOT!

Being an entrepreneur is not for the weak. It has its ups and downs, good days and bad days where you make lots of money and days you don’t make any. In Memphis, everything’s a competition no one wants to see you win. You have people that pray for your downfall.

But it’s up to you to overlook that, you have to say consistent, you have to be your number one supporter. Even if no one is liking your post, sharing your post, or booking KEEP POSTING. It’s been times when I thought about giving up because this industry is saturated in Memphis and the MUA are all amazing.

But that only motivated me to be better to want to turn my business into a brand and help other young girls who aspire to be an MUA. I have this saying that I say to myself “God gives his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers.” With that faith I know I can get through everything.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a full-time mom of a three-year-old boy.

A self-taught makeup artist & a business owner of “It Girl Cosmetics” I started my cosmetics line in March 2022, I have working on this line since 2020, and I finally released the brand that I put so much hard on work and time into.

This is not just a business that’s for the money this is what brings happiness into my life.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
