Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiara Adams.
Hi Kiara, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was just a normal girl going to college to get a degree and figure out life after. That quickly changed the summer before my last semester of college. My father passed suddenly and my world flipped upside down.
Because I only had 3 more classes to get my degree I finished and graduated in December of 2019. I worked in the school system for a while and realized I had an interest in natural hair and so I searched and found a school and enrolled.
I graduated from school and decided to do hair part-time at first. Soon after, I started to realize that working a full-time job wasn’t for me so I stepped out on faith and went full time with my business.
Things flew by and so many changes were made. I took my time invested in classes and coaching to be able to upscale my business. I’ve had many challenges on this journey but I definitely wouldn’t change them for anything in the world.
Being an entrepreneur is the hardest thing anyone can choose to do but it’s worth every headache, bad day, and any other obstacles. Learning to take care of others the way you want to be taken care of is a skill most don’t have and can be so rewarding.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Entrepreneurship is NEVER an easy road.
Losing my father in the blink of an eye flipped a switch in my head. I knew I didn’t have a safety net anymore and so had to work hard to be able to do what was needed to help my mom and keep me afloat.
Being that my dad worked for someone and for himself, I’ve seen the sacrifices that were made and things that were done to make ends meet.
After losing him, I had to re-evaluate my life and what I wanted to do, and how I wanted to do it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a licensed natural hair stylist that specializes in knotless braids, natural and faux locs, and natural hair care. I’m most known for my love of color in my knotless braids & butterfly locs.
I’m most proud of my ability to bring styles to life through colors. I think the brightness and amount of colors I use for my styles set me apart from everyone else.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I don’t have a favorite childhood memory but I do have a story from my childhood that I’ll never forget…
I was 9 or 10 and my Godmother at the time picked me and my younger brother up to take us to the fair. I was super excited to go. The entire ride there I was in the backseat thrilled to be able to go. Once I got there, I wanted to do everything. Ride every ride, try all the food, and play so the games. We got in and started walking around getting food and playing games and just enjoying life.
Some time went by and I realized that my Godmother had walked off and left us. I started to panic a little but not so much that I got frustrated. For this was the first time I was in a situation like this… My brother was panicking and I was trying to calm him down. I was trying to calm him down and remembered we are at the fair!
They have a Ferris wheel! We’ll be able to see everything, We quickly rushed to the Ferris wheel and got on. As soon as we got up in the air, I searched for my Godmother until I found her!
From that moment on, I’ve found a situation to any problem I’ve had. It wasn’t the best memory to come to terms with but it helped me be the person I am today & helped new realize that Ferris wheels are a safe haven for me.
