Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiara Lance.
Hi Kiara, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
During the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic, I started to reconsider my career options. My goal was to become a figure in the medical field, but seeing how the world changed before my eyes started to get my mind spinning. I’ve always had a subtle passion for the beauty industry so I decided to give it a shot. I quit my job and stopped going to school in my second semester as a college freshman to do hair full time. I gained lots of clientele and customers while doing hair at home.
After about 2 years, my passion for hair grew deeper. Therefore, I enrolled in hair school to become a licensed Natural Hair Stylist to upgrade my knowledge in the hair industry for my sake as well as my clients’ sake. A couple months after graduation and passing my final tests, I rented out a suite at Nicole J Rich Lifestyle Salon Suites.
Little did I know, becoming a licensed professional and getting a suite would shift my mindset completely. I used to be known for doing amazing wigs and extravagant styles, but day by day, I fell out of love with it. Now that I could shampoo and examine my clients’ hair, I saw that a lot of their foundations needed a little more than just tlc. It went against my integrity to continue to mask all of their internal damage with silky bundles. After wrestling with myself about the clients I might loose, I took a chance of faith to only provide my top booked services to my clients with alopecia and scalp conditions, while adding new services that would help my other clients appreciate their natural hair more. Shockingly, I started to attract lots of new women simply because of how much I care about the health of their hair!
My current goal. as a hair professional, is to let my clients know that frontals and wigs are not the only styles that make them “pretty” and that the hair growing from their very scalps can be just as beautiful. My duty is to get them to care about their hair just as much as I do.
Isn’t it crazy what God can do in just 3 years ? I started out as a newly high school graduate doing wigs out of her grandparent’s and mom’s house that transformed into a licensed hair professional with an office space providing black women with luxury and nurturing hair experiences!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being an entrepreneur isn’t all confetti and sprinkles though. It’s a lot of self accountability, tough losses, healing and trauma that I had to dig through to keep me in a stable place. It’s like the more successful I became, the more God revealed what I needed to work on whether it was pride, perfectionism, greed, or low self esteem. I think the biggest obstacle I’ve faced was myself. And, to some extent, it still is. Being a business owner taught me that I have the power to contribute to either 3 things: my uprising, my stagnant state, or my downfall. Then one day God asked me “Why don’t you feel like you deserve a blessing ? Why don’t you believe in yourself like how I believe in you”?
And THAT in itself says a lot. If the Most High believes in little ole Kiara. Then I must not be so little now am I?
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My goal is to inform African American women about the beauty dynamics of how their hair operates. Just like women comes in all shapes and sizes, so does hair texture. Unfortunately, majority of young black girls were not informed about the proper hair care it takes to have healthy curls and coils. I’m grateful that the Lord called me to help my fellow black women flourish when it comes to natural hair care!
So before we get to the long and flowy extensions, I really like to take my time to cleanse, hydrate, and prep the hair before we do any type of installation/style. I’m definitely confident enough to say that the shampoo bowl is 1000% my favorite part of any service. It’s just so soothing to me personally because I know that my client is relaxed and getting the treatment she deserves.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
Since I focus on the relaxation and nurturing process of a hair appointment, I would love for a hair or foot masseuse to elevate the pampering experiences. As women, we can never go wrong with too much glam. So I would definitely love to collaborate with a makeup artist to help my clients leave with MAXIMUM confidence! And if you don’t have anything physical to offer, no worries. Just pray for me and the prosperity of my ministry. Prayer goes a long way and it holds more weight than anything on earth.
