Check Out Kyla Cook’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyla Cook

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Greetings, Memphis Voyager community,

I am Kyla B. Cook, the heart and soul behind Closed Spaces Inc. The ‘B’ stands for Boneta, but if you ask me on a different day, I might say it’s for Beatrice—a little whimsy inspired by the books that made my childhood a delight, courtesy of the late Barbara Park, author of the Junie B. Jones series.

The inspiration behind Closed Spaces Inc. is rooted in the desire to create a sanctuary of creativity and innovation. It’s the dream of transforming the mundane into the extraordinary, of turning empty rooms into vibrant hubs of activity and thought. The vision was to build not just physical spaces, but to cultivate environments where ideas can breathe, grow, and connect.
It was about seeing potential where others saw voids, about filling those voids with vigor. Closed Spaces Inc. was born from the belief that every space has a story waiting to be told, and every room can be a canvas for inspiration. It’s this belief that continues to drive us forward, to redefine boundaries and to create spaces that are as limitless as our imaginations.

My journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the pursuit of knowledge. As a dedicated mother of two, I was blessed to further my education at Colorado Technical University. My academic path is leading me towards a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, with the class of 2026 eagerly awaiting my graduation. This degree is not just a piece of paper; it’s the key to unlocking my potential in a career pertaining to human resources and management across a spectrum of industries.

The workforce can be a labyrinth for those stepping in without formal education. I’ve navigated through this maze, often finding myself amidst disarray and uninspiring leadership. These challenges, however, didn’t deter me. Instead, they sparked a fire within me to forge a different path—one that ensures a nurturing and organized environment for my team and clients.

In the heart of Memphis, TN, I laid the foundation for Closed Spaces Inc. in 2020. It began as a simple podcast and quickly blossomed into a community cornerstone. Our vision is a simple yet profound: to foster positive change and mental health awareness. We are not here to preach; we are here to validate. Validation goes beyond listening—it acknowledges someone’s feelings and experiences as valid. It’s a powerful way to support and empower others.

It’s important to recognize that many young people today feel a significant pressure to conform to specific religious concepts of life. This pressure can come from various sources, including family, community, and societal expectations. However, it’s essential to understand that faith is a personal journey and can manifest differently for everyone.
The essence of faith lies within the individual—it’s about finding inner peace, purpose, and a sense of belonging on one’s own terms. It’s not necessarily about adhering to a prescribed set of beliefs or rituals, but rather about nurturing a personal connection with what you hold sacred or meaningful.
Empowerment comes from the realization that faith is not a one-size-fits-all experience. It’s about allowing oneself the freedom to explore, question, and discover what resonates personally. By supporting each other in these individual journeys, we foster an environment where the youth can grow and find their unique path, free from the weight of external pressures.

Closed Spaces Inc. has grown from a fledgling idea into a beacon of hope and dialogue. Our commitment to mutual support has resonated with local professionals and peers alike, creating a ripple effect of compassion and understanding ever since.

As I look to the future, I see Closed Spaces Inc. not just as my business, but as a movement. A movement that champions the well-being of every individual and the collective strength of our community.

Education: Knowledge is power, and we want to empower. We’re planning to launch workshops and seminars to share our expertise and learn from others, fostering a culture of continuous learning.

My inspiration for this venture can be traced back to undying support from my family, particularly my mother, Kesha Cook-Norman. A talented performer and singer, her dedication to her craft and her website, www.keshacook.net, has been a guiding light in my pursuit of excellence. Her upcoming events & projects, even her released projects already available on all platforms such as Apple Music, Spotify and more, are a reflection of her passion and dedication to the arts. Alongside my mother, Kesha Cook, whose artistic talents and entrepreneurial spirit have been a constant inspiration, my stepdad, Keith P. Norman, has played a pivotal role in my success. His belief in my dreams and his investment—both emotional and financial—have allowed me to hone my passions and turn them into a reality.
His encouragement to pursue my interests with vigor and dedication has been a cornerstone of my development, both personally and professionally. It’s with his guidance that I’ve been able to navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship and create a platform that resonates with so many. Growing up without a father was pretty tough, though through him and my uncles, I definitely found the love any little girl could ever dream of obtaining. Openheartedly, I find peace in knowing that Aisha B. Jones’ star shines brighter each night knowing I have a village of Mountain Men holding my hand throughout this scary journey called Life. Love and miss you dad, always.
As I share my story with Memphis Voyager, I want to highlight the collective support of my brothers and sister, which has been instrumental in shaping Closed Spaces Inc. Their belief in my vision has been a driving force behind our mission to create safe spaces for open conversations.

The First Congregational Church has also had a huge impact on my life and work. It’s a community that not only supports its members but also extends its reach to foster justice and peace throughout Memphis. Known affectionately as First Congo, this church is a beacon of progressive faith in the heart of midtown Memphis. It’s a place that embodies an open and affirming stance, champions just peace, and actively engages in anti-racist work.
Under the spiritual leadership of Rev. Tony Coleman, true community has been a source of inspiration and support for me. Esteemed for his commitment and ministrations, his guidance has helped shape my commitment to creating spaces where everyone, especially our youth, feels safe and valued. The church members have formed a robust support network, offering encouragement and resources that have been instrumental in our growth. Their active participation has helped us to reach a wider audience and deepen our impact. My church has truly been a cornerstone in the foundation and growth of Closed Spaces Inc. Their ethos of being an open and affirming, just peace, and actively anti-racist community of faith has deeply influenced our organizational values and practices.

In closing, I extend my deepest gratitude to the Memphis Voyager community for being a part of this journey. The road ahead is filled with promise and potential, and it is the unwavering support of individuals like you that fuels our collective aspirations. Together, we are not just building spaces; we are nurturing the seeds of change and innovation.
Closed Spaces Inc. stands as a testament to what can be achieved when passion meets purpose. As we continue to grow and evolve, our commitment to creating inclusive, empowering, and dynamic spaces remains steadfast. We are more than a company; we are a community, a family, united in our pursuit of excellence and the betterment of society.
Thank you for walking this path with us. Let us step forward into a future where every space we touch becomes a source of inspiration and every voice that joins our chorus adds to the harmony of progress.

With heartfelt appreciation,

Kyla B. Cook Founder, Closed Spaces Inc.

P.S. Ultimately, I would not have been able to achieve any of this without the love and support of my dear friends Kiana Love and Emerson Grimes. They brutally proofread all of my content in their spare time and are not afraid to get in the ring when I am being bullheaded about change. Thank you for believing in me, you guys are the best Safe Place a B.A.P. can ask for. Black American Princesses rule the world!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Imagine setting sail on the vast ocean with nothing but a compass and a star to guide you. That’s been my journey—exciting, unpredictable, and certainly not smooth sailing.
Embarking on the entrepreneurial voyage with Closed Spaces Inc. has indeed mirrored the complex nature of the sea. The challenges have been as diverse as they have been demanding. Motivation can ebb and flow like the tide, and there have been times when it has retreated to worrying lows. Financial support, the lifeblood of any startup, has often been in short supply, making each step forward a test of resilience and ingenuity.
Battling rheumatoid arthritis has meant confronting not just physical pain but also the frustration of an unpredictable body. Major panic disorder and insomnia have also been relentless storms, disrupting the calm and demanding a strength that is drawn from deep within. Amidst these personal tempests, the act of balancing the demands of family, work, and school has been akin to navigating through treacherous waters without a map.
Yet, it is through these trials that the true spirit of a founder is forged. Each obstacle surmounted adds a layer of determination, each struggle navigated imparts a lesson, and every small victory paves the way forward. The journey of Closed Spaces Inc. is a testament to the power of community, creativity, compassion, unity, and faith within oneself—values that are the compass guiding this ship through uncharted territories.
As the horizon stretches out before us, the voyage of Closed Spaces Inc. continues. With every challenge we’ve faced, we’ve charted new courses and discovered unexplored territories within ourselves. Our compass, ever true, points towards a future where every individual has a space to call their own—a sanctuary where they can be heard, healed, and uplifted.
We sail forward with the wind of our community’s support at our backs, and the stars of our dreams above us. The struggles we’ve encountered are but waypoints on our map, marking the journey of growth and discovery. Our ship is built on the foundation of faith—not just in a higher power, but in the potential within each of us to overcome, to create, and to unite.
As we navigate the waters of tomorrow, we do so with the knowledge that the most turbulent seas often lead to the most beautiful destinations. We are grateful for the lessons learned, the bonds formed, and the lives touched. And we remain steadfast in our mission to transform closed spaces into open hearts, one story, one moment, and one life at a time.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?

Their enthusiasm with learning are infectious, and they play a pivotal role in motivating everyone involved with our organization. They represent the essence of our mission and serve as a constant reminder of the positive impact we aim to have on the lives of young people. Their involvement is a testament to our belief that children are indeed the future, and nurturing them is the most significant investment we can make. Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Adaptability: The Covid-19 crisis has underscored the importance of adaptability. It has shown us that the ability to quickly pivot and adjust to new circumstances is not just beneficial but essential for survival and growth. Entrepreneurs, in particular, have been compelled to innovate in how they connect with their audience, diversify their offerings, and redefine their target markets to remain relevant in a rapidly evolving environment.

My experience with Closed Spaces Inc. is a testament to this lesson. Our organization’s journey through the pandemic has been one of resilience and adaptability, reflecting a deeper commitment to our community once the crisis palliated.

Communication: The significance of clear and effective communication cannot be overstated, especially when it comes to capturing the essence of a moment. A prime example of this is the work I do with Ms. Diamonique Jackson, a Billboard Recording Artist from Memphis, TN. By taking performance close-ups, we not only showcase her talent but also create a visual narrative that connects with the audience on a deeper level. This requires a keen understanding of the artist’s message and the ability to translate that into a compelling visual story. It’s a process that embodies the essence of communication—listening to the unspoken, supporting the artistic vision, and empowering the artist to reach a wider audience.

For those interested in experiencing her talent live, you can stay updated on Ms. Jackson’s upcoming events by following her on Instagram at iamdiamoniquejackson and Facebook at Diamonique Jackson.

From its humble beginnings as a podcast to its evolution into a cornerstone of youth development, Closed Spaces Inc. has redefined the very essence of what it means to create safe, nurturing environments where children and young adults can thrive. As we look to the future, we are reminded that the journey of Closed Spaces Inc. is far from over. With each new program, partnership, and story, we continue to weave a tapestry of hope, resilience, and unity. Together, we step forward into a world where every person has the opportunity to shine, supported by the unwavering dedication of a community that believes in their potential.
Thank you, Memphis Voyager, for allowing us to share our story, and to all who walk with us, for believing in the vision that every space can be a place of inspiration and every voice can contribute to the harmony of progress.
