Today we’d like to introduce you to Muck Sticky.
Hi Muck, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Born and raised in Memphis, TN, music has always been part of my life. My grandfather was a Sun Studio musician who recorded with the likes of Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis. Unfortunately, he passed before I was born. But the music and stories were always part of my world growing up.
After playing in local bands while I attended college, in 1999, I started recording my own songs using a karaoke machine with dual tape decks in my bedroom. After several years of playing shows and selling CDs I made using my computer, I developed a following so large that when social media came along I quickly rose to the top of the MySpace music charts.
In 2004, I self-released my first full-length album which garnered over 4 million online streams. Since then I’ve independently released 16 albums, 5 compilations, 62 music videos, and 2 indie films, and accumulated more than 250 million streams in more than 200 countries worldwide.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Doing things your own way without any major support from the industry is never easy, but ultimately it has been extremely rewarding. I own all of my music and control all aspects of my career.
There have been countless struggles along the way, and disappointments beyond belief. I’ve dealt with a lot of people who promised to take my career to the top of the world but ended up only trying to take advantage of me and my work.
I haven’t had as many opportunities as major label artists get, nor have I had the same level of mainstream publicity. But that’s not what matters to me. What matters to me is being creative, maintaining control of my art, and being in charge of my life and time.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My music, videos, and movies are known for being most of uplifting nature. Whether it be funny, motivational, or inspirational, the foundation of what I do is intended to bring about good feelings in those who come across it.
I promote enjoying life and living it to the fullest. The world is filled with negativity, and there are enough people out there fighting and being unkind. Music has the power to bring people from all walks of life together, and create harmony among those who need it the most.
I feel it’s my purpose and mission to bring joy and laughter to this painful world. I’m also known for wearing pajama pants as my personal and professional attire, and have been wearing them every single day for more than twenty years. It’s a world record.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
That’s a tough one. I’ve always been so very open about myself in the public forum that I’m not sure what I haven’t shared with them already.
I believe in being very true to yourself, which means being honest with the world around you. So I keep it real. Perhaps they don’t know that I’m a gamer. I play video games in my spare time. I’m kind of a nerd in that respect.
