Today we’d like to introduce you to Renee Benot.
Hi Renee, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
My musical journey began when visiting my grandfather in Detroit. There, I first met my Aunt Terry, an entertainer from Chicago. I was 7 years old, and she was very classy, glamorous, and looked like a movie star. She even had a white poodle. I didn’t know exactly what being an entertainer entailed, but from that moment, I knew in my heart that I wanted to do whatever it was she was doing. My aunt Terry was kind and took a sincere interest in me. She introduced me to the musical sounds of Nancy Wilson, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, and Dionne Warwick. From then on, I listened to all types of music, honed my vocal style, and took piano lessons. Later, I was exposed to a plethora of music via vinyl and 8-track music like the Stylistics, Temptations, Lou Rawls, Marlena Shaw, Nat King Cole, Barry White & The Love Unlimited Orchestra, Earth, Wind & Fire, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Motown, Teddy Pendergrass, Phyllis Hyman, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, Angela Bofill, Anita Baker, loving their tones and phrases.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Smooth? Lol, not at all. Most artists know that part of their job is to make it look easy and that a live performance is nothing short of being an athlete. Throughout my development as a songstress, songwriter, producer, and founder of a production company, I have had countless years of schooling, lessons, coaching, and rehearsals. I have endured many inexperienced pitfalls that resulted in a loss of time and money. Personal losses included the death of loved ones, illness, relationships, and missed opportunities. This industry is not for the faint of heart. I cannot tell you how often I have attempted to quit or questioned myself, ‘Why am I doing this again?’ However, when I finally decided to seek more commercial opportunities, I began connecting the dots to understand the actual business of music, media, and the other connective entities of the industry. This landscape is constantly changing, so you have to find a way to keep up.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
There are two different Renee’s; however, they have learned to work together while occupying the same body and brain. Renee, the artistic, creative, energetic being, is curious, always learning, and interested in other creative avenues; then there is the analytical businesswoman with a different energy. I was born into an entrepreneurial family, so business comes to me as second nature. “There is transparency in everything I do. Depending on whether I’m giving a business presentation, social event, or LIVE performance, you have a clear idea of what to expect, nothing but true excellence.” As a contemporary jazz/R&B/pop powerhouse entertainer, I am known as a high-energy, success-driven leader in most aspects of my personal and professional life as CEO of Jonei Productions. In addition to my expansive musical expertise, I’m equipped with a broad tool kit of business development skills, including product positioning, consulting, and marketing skills that focus on management logistics. My business interests include strategic corporate collaborations and endorsements. The main takeaway is that I have finally and proudly learned how to make a living in the industry I love the most without compromising my values and goodwill. My attention to people and details sets me apart from others while delivering the sounds of yesterday packaged for today’s listening audience.
Today, I am Renee Benot, a contemporary Jazz/R&B musical artist who embraces creative interpretations in the delivery of her style and songs[1]. She is a songwriter and producer. One of my top performing original songs is ‘Faith,’ a powerful and uplifting song that inspires people to believe in themselves and their dreams[2]. A total of three songs were first presented and copy written on the debut CD sampler. ‘It’s You’ is a catchy tune that displays the feelings of belonging to the love of another. In addition, the song ‘Set Me Free’ is a twist on how the emotional bond of love provides you with the true freedom to explore, while allowing yourself to feel safe in a familiar space. Recently, I introduced the song ‘Whatever,’ which delivers a smooth and soulful contemporary jazz track that showcases my vocal range and expressive style[3]. This was the birth of having complete creative control and direction under my production company Jonei Productions. With enthusiasm and positive results from the previous project, the plan is to deliver the upcoming 2024 collection of songs that will reintroduce songs written earlier in my career, ‘Just Can’t Wait’ and formally introduce ‘Love Don’t Cost, ‘ an upbeat and funky tune that challenges the materialistic aspects of love and relationships[4].
You can listen to Renee Benot’s top 5 songs on Shazam, Spotify, SoundCloud, and all other digital platforms. What makes her music so special is her ability to blend different genres and influence and to convey her emotions and messages through her voice and lyrics. She is a talented and versatile artist who deserves more recognition and appreciation. Be sure to visit www.reneebenot.com and sign up for her new pre-releases, promotions, and performance dates[5].
Please talk to us about happiness and what makes you happy.
What makes me happy now is that I have reconnected with my spiritual roots by making God my most important relationship. He is well aware of my consistent study of all people who desire to have passion and seek love in their life. I can’t help it, I am a romantic soul. I have finally found my happy place in musical creativity and confidence as a businesswoman writing my own ticket to success. It took a long time to get here, but thank God I’m still here to fulfill the real purpose he has for me. I’m proud that I’ve learned to forgive myself, accept my flaws and my imperfections because it’s really not that serious, and it will be okay after all!
