Today we’d like to introduce you to Robin Rivera.
Hi Robin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m a Mom, an Entrepreneur, and an Educator. Pretty much everything I do is for the love of ART + SCIENCE. I believe that “Hair doesn’t have a race… only TEXTURE!!” and with it, I create ART.
I know a lot of children have their career dreams, and mine was to be a Hairstylist. My parents weren’t very supportive of that decision because I excelled in the sciences and arts. As a child, I enjoyed experimenting with different colors and shapes always “styling” my dolls. Each doll had its own cut and color, (from Hydrogen Peroxide, Lemon juice and Kool-Aid – to Synthetic Hair or Old-school Yarn). Nothing could stop the urge to create a look for my “babies.”
During my high school years, I enjoyed laboratory experiments in chemistry and adored mathematics. The balance to my life came through the creative and performing arts (Cello, Piano). As a self-proclaimed, NERD, my academics are imperative to my art.
College was a rewarding experience (Tennessee State University) but I didn’t complete a degree there. Changing course after the birth of my first child, I went to Cosmetology School and got licensed.
My diverse background has enabled me to become a multicultural texture specialist for both men and women. The ability to work with any texture that is presented to me has always been the goal. So, I’ve learned to combine my interests and talents to be one of the best at what I love the most.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t always been easy. I’m a single mom, a business owner and I travel to teach seminars & shows. Sometimes it’s difficult to balance work & family time. It can be challenging to keep everything on a schedule but it’s crucial to do so. If not, nothing works. This pandemic was a super challenge, however, I found a way to pivot and keep going.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Master Texturist/International Educator. I specialize in Natural Hair Textures. I have worked with the global haircare brand, Avlon Industries, Inc. for 17 years. I’m a bilingual (Spanish) self-proclaimed HAIRNERD!
In 2017, I started the Hue+Mane Society. Society is a group of beauty professionals that are committed to changing the reflection of the community. The HUEMANEity charity event is society’s biggest fundraiser.
During the pandemic, I created a brand of masks/face coverings that are handmade called Mask+Cara. They literally became another business stream during the shutdown and continue still.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Look to meet someone who is doing what you want to do. Do your research. Check for receipts. Then honestly make your approach with true interest and intentions.
Have something you bring to the equation. Most creatives learn from every exchange so being authentic will invite an opportunity for a true connection.
Get to know the neighborhood before you move in.
