Today we’d like to introduce you to Vera Dantzler.
Hi Vera, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
In 2008, DanzHouse opened in Southeast Memphis. Our mission is to cultivate students ages 3-18 through formal dance training to become well rounded individuals through their artistic and academic career. Our “More Than Danz” program is a transformative dance initiative dedicated to providing high-quality dance education to underprivileged children in Memphis, TN. Through ballet, tap, jazz, and hip-hop, we aim to instill discipline, focus, and confidence while making learning fun and accessible. Our program not only teaches dance technique but also serves as a vehicle for personal growth, self-esteem development, and positive community engagement.
Over the years we have had the opportunity to share our love for dance with over 1,000 children in Memphis and surrounding areas.
“If you are fortunate to have opportunity, it is your duty to make sure other people have those opportunities as well.” – Kamala Harris
This past year has presented an opportunity for the studio to expand into offering community series classes to expose children to the world of dance. Danz901, the nonprofit extension of DanzHouse Studio, was created to make dance accessible and transformative for youth in underserved communities. With a track record of excellence, inclusion, and cultural pride, dance is used to empower, uplift, and inspire students who participate in the program. The first community based series was Rhythm for All – a free community dance series offering 6-weeks of dance exploration. Participants explored ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop and gymnastics taught by professional instructors in a fun, welcoming environment.
The goal is to offer more community series in areas where dance can be brought to those under-served areas that lack access to extracurricular activities that promote personal development. Dance provides a creative outlet, fosters discipline, and enhances physical and mental well-being. However, financial barriers often prevent children from accessing quality instruction. “More Than Danz” seeks to bridge this gap by offering free or low-cost dance education to children ages 3-13, ensuring that economic hardship does not limit their opportunities for growth.
DanzHouse and Danz901 work together to expand access to dance education across Memphis. DanzHouse will serve as the primary training facility, providing professional instructors, studio space, and structured class programming. Meanwhile, the Danz901 Foundation will focus on outreach, fundraising, and securing sponsorships to fund scholarships, community dance series, and enrichment programs for underserved youth. This partnership ensures both access and excellence while building a strong, inclusive dance community.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road for DanzHouse. We have definitely faced our share of challenges—especially with balancing the rising costs of operations while keeping classes affordable for families. There were times when enrollment dropped, funding was limited, and we had to get creative. Our love for dance and commitment to our students kept us going. Every obstacle has made us stronger, and we continue to push forward dedication and heart.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5–10 years, I see the dance industry becoming more inclusive, tech-savvy, and wellness-focused. There’s a growing push for accessibility, cultural representation, and hybrid learning models using tools with virtual classes and interactive tech. We are planning to incorporate a family fun dance class that includes parents to present a physical wellness element for parents. Families are also looking for studios that align with their values, so mission-driven programs like DanzHouse and Danz901 will have an even greater impact.
