Check Out Xavier Lacy’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Xavier Lacy.

Hi Xavier, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began my journey as a licensed Master Barber in 2005, building a loyal clientele in the Westwood and Whitehaven areas of Memphis. I hit the pavement daily—passing out flyers and business cards outside local businesses—to establish my brand and presence in the community. I also introduced my clients to hot towel facials, which helped spark a shift among Black men in the Westwood community toward skincare and self-care.

My attention to detail and commitment to excellence quickly earned me a strong reputation—so much so that clients began calling me “The Doctor.” That nickname became the foundation of my personal brand, Come See The Doctor.

In 2019, I opened my own barbershop, Definition of Cutz, which is now proudly celebrating six years in business and my 20th year in the hair industry. In 2022, we joined the Greater Memphis Chamber, and through that network, I secured a grant from IKEA. With those funds, I launched my own hair care line, Doctor’z Orders—a line of organic, vegan, and cruelty-free products designed with quality and wellness in mind.

Doctor’z Orders officially launched in January 2024, and we’re already making an impact, with customers in 21 states and growing. Our success stories are gaining momentum on social media, and the movement continues to expand.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In the early days of my career, I faced real challenges—some days I made as little as $0 to $25. There were moments when I questioned whether barbering was the right path for me. I even worked a part time job cleaning banks with my grandfather until I could build my clientele. I hustled to pass out flyers in the streets to let people know who I was and what I offered. I spread flyers throughout the entire community where I worked at the time. Sometimes it would be a year or more before the client would show up. I worked in shops that were not a great fit for me, but I didn’t give up. Instead, I committed myself to studying and mastering my craft. I am a very detailed barber so I take my time with each client, some times that could lead to clients resorting in being serviced by someone who may have been faster than me but not as detailed. I was determined to succeed and become a respected entrepreneur. Over time, my skills sharpened—my fades improved, and I mastered the art of using a straight razor. That dedication laid the foundation for everything I’ve built today. In November 2019, I opened my very own barber shop, called Definition of Cutz. Four months later, COVID hit and changed everything. I had to then shut down my business for months. That was a challenge for me because during that time my wife was in nursing school and we were relying solely on my income to not only live off but to also pay her tuition. By the grace of God we made it through.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
