Community Highlights: Meet Amanda Davis of AD Productions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Davis. They and their team shared their story with us below:Amanda Davis

Amanda Davis is a multi-talented force in the music industry. She hails from Memphis, TN, and has left her mark as an audio engineer, educator, production manager, singer, and musician. She earned her stripes at Chicago’s Roosevelt University (2008; Bachelor of Arts in Music in Vocal Performance) and SAE Institute in Atlanta (2010; Music Recording and Production), embodying a passion for education, women’s empowerment, and trailblazing.

Her journey began as the first female Lab Supervisor and Music Theory instructor at SAE Institute, where she honed her skills and ignited a commitment to fostering inclusivity. This dedication led her to global adventures as an Audio Technician for Carnival Cruise Lines before catching the attention of Emmy-winning artist Janelle Monáe in 2013. Handpicked as Monáe’s Front of House Engineer, Amanda’s career skyrocketed, mixing for iconic figures like Prince and Stevie Wonder in renowned venues worldwide.

In 2016, Canadian duo Tegan and Sara tapped Amanda as their FOH engineer, followed by her appointment as Production Manager on their acclaimed “The Con X” tour in 2017. During this time, Amanda collaborated with an impressive array of artists, from the legendary Olivia Newton-John to the trailblazing Nipsey Hussle, showcasing her versatility and expertise.

A busy 2018 and 2019 followed as Davis returned to her perch as Ms. Monáe’s FOH engineer for “The Dirty Computer Tour” while also taking the helm as the Production Manager and FOH engineer for chart-topping artist Ella Mai’s “The Debut Tour” and Tegan & Sara’s “Hey I’m Just Like You” Tour. While preparing for “The Dirty Computer Tour,” Amanda worked with non-profits, universities, and local organizations to create “Linecheck, Women in Live Production,” a mentoring program dedicated to young women who are pursuing a career in live sound mixing and production/tour management; focusing on professionalism practices and life as a tour crew member.

Returning to her roots in Memphis in 2020, Amanda’s talents flourished at David Porter’s 4U Recording studio, where she lent her recording, mixing, and co-production prowess to notable projects like Kortland Whalum’s “A Love Letter” EP and TANGELA’s “Splendid Mind” EP. Tegan and Sara also entrusted her with mixing duties for their special Record Store Day vinyl release, cementing her reputation as a sought-after studio engineer.

Amidst her studio endeavors, Amanda remains a fixture on the live circuit, mixing for Ralph Lauren’s spring fashion premiere and an array of chart-topping artists, including Doja Cat, Jon Batiste, and Jazmine Sullivan. Her commitment to empowering women in the industry extends beyond her work, with appearances on platforms like Pensado’s Place and guest lectures at Berklee College of Music Valencia, amplifying her impact and inspiring the next generation of audio professionals. As she continues to master her craft, Amanda Davis stands as a beacon of excellence, resilience, and innovation in the music world.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey, though not without its share of learning curves and hard lessons, has been a testament to the power of resilience. Each challenge, whether it was about the industry, about others, or about myself, has been a stepping stone towards building a successful career. Embracing these moments as opportunities for growth, I’ve not only navigated my path but also emerged stronger and more inspired.

As you know, we’re big fans of AD Productions. For our readers who might need to become more familiar with the brand, what can you tell them about it?
I am an audio engineer specializing in front-of-house (FOH) mixing. While that might sound technical, many people are more familiar with my role than they realize. I’m the person responsible for the sound quality at concerts, ensuring that attendees hear and enjoy the performances they’ve paid to see. I prefer not to be simply called a “sound person” because my work encompasses much more than sound. Mixing for different artists and tours requires technical skill and the ability to maintain composure under pressure. It’s one thing to learn the mixing techniques, but it’s another to manage the high stakes of an artist’s career during a live performance in front of thousands of people. This ability to stay calm and professional in high-pressure situations truly sets me apart. My reputation for reliability and professionalism is evident when a client engages me. My clients trust me to deliver outstanding sound quality while maintaining a calm demeanor, ensuring that every show runs smoothly and fans have a memorable experience. That’s the core part of my brand: exceptional sound engineering combined with unwavering professionalism.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
My entire job could be seen as risky! Hahaha! Each time a client holds a microphone, it’s a risk. Each time an event starts and attendees are hyped to hear, it’s a risk. I’ve faced situations where, despite meticulous preparation, something happened, and there was no output from the PA system, my console shut down mid-show, or I didn’t get a proper sound check. It’s undeniably risky, but I’ve learned that with thorough preparation and a steady mindset, each risk is an opportunity to better your craft and commit to the old saying that “the show must go on.” Risks are manageable when you are prepared and steady. I can adopt that mindset and calm demeanor in stressful times because of my unwavering faith in God. My faith is the cornerstone of how I approach my career and decision-making. Trusting in God’s divine guidance and committing to that trust has shifted my perspective on risk. With a solid foundation of faith and self-confidence, challenges feel more like growth opportunities than risks. I rely on my faith and training; together, I can figure it out even when my console powers off mid-show (true story).
