Today we’d like to introduce you to Candis Gibbs.
Hi Candis, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi guys, so I started in the fashion industry 11 years ago in 2011 as a model. I was 19 full of life and ready to follow my dreams. Had the chance to walk for New York Harlem Fashion Row and many local designers here in the city.
Years later down the road, my role switched from Fashion Model to Fashion Show Coordinator. I started off just helping out backstage at fashion shows, to coordinating my 1st full fashion show back in 2015 named Distracted Runway 3.0.
We were bringing awareness to the importance of No Texting And Driving. People begin to gravitate toward my style as I coordinated styling for shows and offered to pay me for distressed jeans and show them how to style pieces.
At that time, I had no clue what a Wardrobe Stylist was but little did I know that’s where my heart belonged. I have worked with local artists in the city like Big Boogie, and Michael Edwards to bigger artists like Bow Wow and Dutches from Black Ink Crew.
My shop is located in midtown off of Union Ave by appointments only, and no you don’t have to be a celebrity to book, lol. Most of my clients are faithful and loyal everyday hard-working people and I love them all.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth ride at all lol.
I had to learn how to run a successful business, taxes, contracts, and all the not-so-fun stuff. When I 1st started in the game I thought it would be fun just to style people in pretty clothes and tag me on social media, until I met Uncle Sam lol. Candis’s Closet is a real business under LLC and not just something I do for fun anymore.
It’s my baby and every day I continue to think of ways to grow my business and network with new people.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I’m a Wardrobe Stylist and Fashion Designer located in Memphis, TN.
I specialize in Urban Apparel because that’s what I grew up on. I wanna say my mom purchased my 1st per of Jordan’s when I was in the 6th grade and I was in love ever since then.
My brand is still growing into something special. I treat all my clients like family and treat each custom garment as if I’m sewing for a superstar because that’s the way I want you to feel wearing my pieces.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the food, the culture, and the music. The fashion in the city is really picking up and I’m here for all the new trends. My least favorite I would say definitely the weather right now, lol.
