Hi Chris, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
In 2014, I decided I didn’t want to work in the corporate 9-5 world anymore. I didn’t want to be stuck in a dead-end job until I retired at 65+, and I knew that if I wanted to break free from the 9-5 grind, I had to do something about it. I came across dropshipping and quickly realized its potential, so I decided to take a step into the unknown and give it a try. When I started my business, my only goal was to earn an extra £200 a month to help pay my bills and save up for a road trip across America. I saved up £250 initially to get started, and I built my first store around my full-time 9-5 job. I made many mistakes early on, and it took me almost 3 years to make it work through trial and error, but I kept pushing through, determined to succeed. When my first successful store hit £500,000 within a few months of launching it in 2017, it got the attention of Shopify & Oberlo. They could see the numbers that my business was generating because I used their platform, so they got in touch and asked me if I wanted to be a featured guest on their YouTube channel. They flew me to Berlin to meet the team and record that video for their YouTube channel, so I could talk about how I achieved what I did in such a short amount of time and share tips and advice for other people who want to get started. My story was even picked up by one of the biggest financial information websites in the world, Marketwatch.com, and I appeared on the homepage of Yahoo because of it. In the years since I first launched my business, I’ve quit my 9-5 job, I’ve built a team, we’ve optimized our strategies, and we’ve now gone on to generate millions of dollars online.
Dropshipping has given me the financial freedom I only ever dreamed of. Over the years, I’ve been featured by multiple media companies and stood on stage at the annual Shopify corporate summit in Berlin. Yes, I finally took that trip across the US! I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
For the first 3 years, I tried many things to make my dropshipping business work but couldn’t get it off the ground. Nothing worked, and it was a complete failure. Looking back, with the experience I have now, it was clear that I had no idea what I was doing when I first started, and the only reason it took me so long was that I didn’t have a proven plan or a mentor to show me what to do. It was only when I started to learn the skills needed to sell things online that I began to see the success I was looking for. However, the bumps never stop; running a business is hard work, and there are always challenges to overcome. A lot of managing comes down to mindset and understanding that challenges are part of running a business. When you can accept that, it makes everything so much easier.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?

People use Dropshipping as if it’s some fancy get-rich-quick scheme, but it’s not; you’re building an eCommerce business using that drop-shipping fulfillment model. Now we all know that eCommerce is growing exponentially, so there’s never been a better opportunity to get started than now. One of the most significant shifts I see happening is transitioning from Facebook advertising to Tik Tok advertising. We are already seeing that happen now, so over the next few years, I see that as the primary marketing strategy for many businesses.
