Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Brown.
Hi Lauren, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up in Chicago during the 1960s and 1970s, experiencing the civil rights movement, desegregation, gangs, and riots. Higher education opportunities were open to blacks during that time.
I went to a mostly white high school and took AP classes, making the honor roll. After college and law school, I worked for a legal services agency, helping low-income clients. I then became an assistant prosecutor, deputy prosecutor, defense attorney, and private practice lawyer. I even officiated weddings and worked for HUD.
My career also included being a community advocate for a social justice agency, focusing on prisoner re-entry and juvenile justice. These issues are close to my heart because they impact my community in a big way. Combining my background and passion, I aimed to serve others and make a positive impact.
Throughout my career as an entrepreneur and advocate, I learned a lot about people, our country, and myself. My skills and compassion have been key to serving others. I am proud to use my legal, business, and advocacy background to help businesses succeed.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Growing up poor, black, and female was tough. Society’s idea of success didn’t look like me.
One vivid memory from high school was when white gang members forced black students out of the classroom at gunpoint. I was scared, and my teacher did nothing. But our parents stood up for us, demanding protection from the city, police, and school.
Finding a job after law school was hard because law firms rarely hired black women. I had a better experience at a legal services agency. As a lawyer, I constantly had to prove myself. One judge even said I won a case because of my charm, not my skills!
People often told me I’d never amount to anything coming from the ghetto. But my family, teachers, and church elders encouraged me to be my best and never give up. Their voices still guide me today, inspiring me to be of service to others.
