Today we’d like to introduce you to Luke Tylee.
Hi Luke, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started Nice Tintz in 2006 as a mobile window tinting service for other businesses and car dealerships that wanted to offer automotive tinting but didn’t have tinters on staff. My wife and I were new parents so it was a scary jump into entrepreneurship but It turned out to be the best decision. There were certainly ups and downs but being mobile meant I got to meet a lot of people and build a solid customer base for what was to come. I was strictly mobile until about 2018 when our youngest was born. I was getting more and more work from individuals and not just businesses. At the time I still didn’t have a brick and mortar so I turned our home garage into a tinting studio to handle the extra work. That actually opened up a not so bad problem. There was too much work for 1 person so I had to make a choice. I remember bringing our youngest home from being born on a Monday and heading to the dealership on Tuesday because we’ll all the work still had to be done. That was my last day as a mobile tinter. I solely worked from home from then. I did it! I was able to work from home and support my family but I felt maybe I have something that can be even bigger than just me in the garage. It was just a thought in the back of my mind that wouldn’t go away. So about when Covid hit I hired my first full time employee that wanted to learn and because of Covid he wasn’t working. So many businesses were struggling and we were still busy. It was around that time we had an opportunity for a perfect brick and mortar location. I thought if we can get through an epidemic what is holding us back so we took the leap. At the end of 2020 we opened the doors to where we are now. What started with me, my wife and my one employee has grown into a team of 8. We expanded our services with paint protection films and vehicle wraps and have grown every year since we made the move. There are definitely growing pains but we had so much support. We implemented core values and processes early which was huge in scaling. New hires have a blueprint of expectations and step by step processes. Making the transition from technician to owner has been the hardest thing for me but watching my team evolve and learn is something I enjoy more than the work itself. I did not see that coming. We aren’t as dialed in as we need to be but we have come so far in a short period.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The biggest struggle is being the best leader my team needs me to be. When we decided to scale I was still an installer not a leader so that transition is still a work in progress lol. I have a solid team though that puts up with my shortcomings
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Nice Tintz?
We offer automotive window tinting, paint protection films, and vehicle wraps. What I feel sets us apart is we strive for the best customer experience we can. I feel like that is something that has kinda taken a back seat with a lot of businesses. Obviously we strive to put out the best possible product but why not do that and make it a great experience for the customer. Our facility is a fun place for customers to experience. You can see everything that’s going on while we perform our sevices plus everyone is friendly. We are fortunate enough to work on some very high end vehicles so it’s not uncommon to drop off your daily driver for window tinting and get to see a Lamborghini lol.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Well here we go! Not a lot of people that know me don’t know this but before I started my career in window tinting I was a professional bullfighter/rodeo clown lol. From 15 years old to about 19 that was everything to me. I actually was on my way to the top but my heart eventually went into other hobbies and in that industry you have to be on point or it’ll make you pay. There’s no way I could still be doing that at 44 years old
