Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Moore.
Hi Nicole, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I didn’t grow up wanting to bake, but I was always the one waiting for the desserts to be done. I didn’t find a love for baking until I had children. I started baking for my children and next-door neighbors.
After a while, I lost my love for baking until I met this sweet lady, Mrs. Fields, through a relationship I was in. She ignited my love for baking again through her baking. For so long, I was longing for those classic cakes, you know the ones like grandma used to make. When I told, Mama Fields (what I call her) I wanted to bake again she gave me recipes from her collection.
During the pandemic, I began making cakes for people I worked with. During a time when we couldn’t be close to our loved ones, I thought it would be good to bring them something that reminded them of home. I mean, don’t we all love the smell of homemade baked chocolate chip cookies or southern poundcake when you walked through mom’s or grandma’s house? They soon began wanting to buy them and the orders started increasing. I asked God for vision and what I should do with this and my business N The Mix was birthed.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth road? Of course not. I’ve encountered many challenges during my time as a business owner. I’ve dropped the ball several times, trying to balance a growing business and family life. Once I got a routine together and focused on what was most important, I tackled that hurdle head-on.
I’ve lost more than I’ve earned, especially trying to do everything and follow up with trends not recognizing it was not my lane to enter at the moment. Right before my one-year business anniversary, I was diagnosed with Lupus and had to have surgery. I was overwhelmed, losing faith that my newly opened business would not survive and my customers wouldn’t return after I came back.
In order to return back to baking in great health, I had to change my way of thinking during my recovery. I had to tell myself every day, “There’s nothing about your health or circumstance that keeps you from God’s perfect will for you!” I had to remind myself why I started this business and it was to provide the sweetest memories in every bite. As long as my quality of baking didn’t change, the people would come.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about N The Mix?
My home-based baking business is called N The Mix. I go by Nikki Allyne and I provide cakes, cookies, pies, and other assortments of desserts. Most of the recipes I use are recipes that were passed down and some are ones I created through trial and error. I specialize in southern cakes like Grandma Used to Make but with a buttercream twist.
I’m best known for The Sassy Red Velvet Cake, Strawberry Delight Cake, and Brown Butta Pecan Chocolate Chip Cookies. I provide desserts for Birthdays, Anniversaries, Corporate Events, Graduations, or just plain ole Sunday Dinner. July 2023 will make two years in business, and I plan to have a great offer on my website for everyone who wants to indulge in my delicious desserts.
What do you think about happiness?
To finally be able to do something I love that puts smiles on people’s faces. My sons get to see me every day working hard to perfect my craft and seeing them amped up every time I make a new cake makes me extremely happy and proud. I don’t know what the future holds, but I’m excited about all the amazing opportunities that will come my way in the future!
