Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamaria Crump-Burnside.
Hi Tamaria, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My father started Crumpy’s Hot Wings in 1991. I was 10 years old. By the time I was 13, I started working in the business under my father. As the years went by seeing him put in so many hours and opening store after store, I said NOPE this is not for me. HAHA! I just wanted a 9 to 5 and that’s it.
Until I finally realized that my dad was setting my siblings and I up for success to keep his legacy going. So. in March 2019, I started my food truck Crumpy’s on the Go. In October 2020, I opened my first restaurant Crumpy’s on 51 in Senatobia Mississippi. That’s where my husband is from. My dad is my inspiration. 32 years serving the midsouth says a lot about my family.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It started off smooth then COVID-19 hit. We faced one of the worst pandemics in America’s history. With that being said, there were safety/health mandates that were put into place by CDC/Health departments at the Federal and state levels and businesses had to comply. because of my compliance with the mandates, there were times people didn’t want to follow the mask mandate rule, therefore I lost customers and received a lot of negative comments on social media, because of it. The Stimulus checks were a deterrent for people to seek full-time gainful employment, and because extra money for unemployment was given, I started losing employees. The inflation caused a tremendous increase in food cost and as a new start-up we just couldn’t catch a break. I even saw big corporations closing that had been in business for decades because of the pandemic. We’re still standing in the midst of it all.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a spin-off from Crumpy’s Hot Wings founded by my father Donald Crump. We decided one day that we wanted to introduce Crumpy’s to North Mississippi and it has set the standard in the south and has positioned Crumpy’s on 51 as the best wings in North Mississippi. For over 30 years Crumpy’s has been serving the best wings in the midsouth.
We offer wings that are bursting with flavor in every bite. Our food is prepared fresh with high-quality ingredients and cooked to perfection. Our goal is to continue to always provide our customers with a great atmosphere, friendly service, and affordable prices. What sets us apart is that we offer whole wings, not party wings, and our all-purpose seasoning is where it’s at.
Anybody can open a hot wing restaurant but if you don’t have the flavor which is the seasoning you have nothing. that’s why we are so different. I’m proud that my father has branded this city and still standing many years later. I believe if my business was named Tammy’s Hot Wings no one would come. But because of that name Crumpy’s stands out to people due to the many years of great service that’s why we are so successful today.
What matters most to you? Why?
Being successful in this business and making my mother and father proud.
By the Grace and Mercy of GOD, We’re still standing in the midst of it all!!
