Today we’d like to introduce you to Ahmia Bates.
Hi Ahmia, I’m so excited to have you on the platform. Before we ask about your work life, you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Since I was a little girl, I have wanted to be an actress or a model; I used to play in my mom’s and grandmom’s heels and makeup and walk up and down the hallway pretending I was walking in a fashion show. My parents always told me I would be a model or an actress one day. As I got older, I fell more in love with modeling. As I went places, people would turn their heads at me because of how tall I am and admire my beauty from afar. As the years progressed and I became an adult, I started to do photo shoots, and all those eyes were just on me, and everybody focused on me and what I would do next. It gives me hope that I would be the next big thing just because of the feeling I get when photographed. When I did my first Fashion show in LA, it gave me the most beautiful insight into my future modeling career because the number of compliments I received that night put me in a better thinking space than before I landed in LA. Coming back home to Memphis and snapping back into reality made me realize that I do not belong here and it’s time for me to stop playing and show the world how great I can be.
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it has not been easy at all. There have been so many times I wanted to give up, but I couldn’t because I thought so long and hard about my future and where I wanted to be, so I got up and kept going. Cosmetology school was one of the biggest sacrifices I have ever made. I was in school for almost 2 years, and I only worked a job in the last few months of being in school. I didn’t have time to do anything and barely went to work, but I overcame that obstacle and became more vital than ever with an even better job and more clientele.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a licensed cosmetologist. I specialize in silk presses, wigs, braids, etc. I’m most proud of how I care for my clients as they sit in my chair and trust me; it warms my heart to feel trusted by several ladies. The fact that I started doing hair in 2020 and as good as I am now, plus having a license to do it, sets me apart from others.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I like that everyone here is talented and unafraid to find a hustle. What I like least about my city is the crime and all the hate that goes on every day all day.
