Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Epps.
Hi Alex, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I started working on music at the age of 18. I tried to assemble a couple of bands but realized I could make my music with my laptop. I have always had an interest in electronic music and music in general, as well as being able to play multiple instruments, so the knowledge transferred to music programs easily. In 2009, I left home at 19 and pursued my goal of doing music full-time. I ended up in Huntington Beach, CA, making connections in Los Angeles, doing DJ sets, and touring for money. In 2014, I returned home to Memphis, and I’ve been here ever since. It’s hard to believe it’s been that long!
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’m going to tell you that nothing in music comes easily. There are hours and hours of work to hone your craft and learn the instruments, programs, etc., not to mention the networking game and social aspect of getting your music heard. I had much more motivation and patience when I was younger to network, socialize, and promote my music. I accept things as they come these days and let my music grow as organically as possible. The electronic music scene now is more of a juggernaut than ever, and if you don’t have a little money behind you pushing your stuff to the forefront of social media(s), it’s a lot harder to get heard. Considering for 6 years, my income was based on nothing but DJ gigs, there was a lot of traveling, and I was only 19 years old and entirely on my own. I had never flown on a plane more than a few times. Then, I go there every weekend to a different state or city. It was wild and had a sense of adventure, but there was also an element of anxiety. As a kid, not even 21, I had to figure out many things on the fly and look out for myself.
Thanks for sharing that. Please tell us more about your work.
I produce various electronic music from Synthwave, Dubstep, Cinematic, Experimental, etc. I’ve had a number 1 selling album on Beatport, the most prominent music distributor for DJs at the time. The album was competing at the same time on the charts with artists such as Steve Aoki, etc. I also have had music in media, such as a season finale of “So You Think You Can Dance,” and a trailer for Michael Bay’s movie “Battleship,” and have also done work on an upcoming film named “Bashira.”
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
